What does persecution look like in Syria?
Despite Syria’s conflict easing slightly in recent years, the challenges facing Christians continue to be numerous and severe.
In areas where Islamic militants are active, leaders of historical churches are particularly vulnerable to attack or kidnap, while most buildings belonging to such groups have been demolished or co-opted for Islamic use. For Christians living in these areas, there is little scope for expressing their faith, and many have been forcibly displaced from their homes.
In government-controlled areas, the authorities are tightening their grip on those whom they feel are a threat to social stability including converts from Islam to Christianity. The attitude of the Syrian government towards churches is determined by the Christian community to which they belong. Although all Christian communities come under pressure, historical churches are in a stronger position to defend their rights than those from non-traditional church groups such as Evangelicals, Baptists and Pentecostals.
Throughout Syria, pockets of conflict persist, and Christians continue to be caught in the crossfire. In some cases, they’re deliberately targeted, for example, in Afrin, where Turkish-backed troops are reported to be targeting Kurdish Christians.
Those who choose to leave Islam to follow Jesus can face intense pressure from their own families, particularly those living in Sunni regions.
Who is most vulnerable to persecution?
Christians are particularly in danger in Idlib province in the northwest, which is still controlled by Islamic militants; and in Hasakah district in the northeast, where Turkish military and Turkey-supported opposition forces are active.
Converts to Christianity are at risk across the country, but their situation is especially dangerous in the northwest and northeast.
What has changed this year?
The level of opposition facing Christians in Syria has broadly remained the same. The key headline from the past year is the devastating earthquakes, which have added to the challenges faced by many Christians.
Prayer Points
Pray that God will continue to help His people to be salt and light following last year’s devastating earthquakes.
Ask that believers from Muslim backgrounds will draw strength from the Holy Spirit as they face opposition for choosing to follow Jesus.
Pray that the Holy Spirit will give relief and refreshment to Syrian Christians who have endured so much over the last decade.

Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani from Iran, as he and his family are adjusting from his release from prison, that they may know what God’s will is for them now. Pray for the trauma they had to endure. UPDATE: According to Article 18, once sentenced to death for his “apostasy” has been “pardoned” and released after nearly five years in Tehran’s Evin Prison but told Nadarkhani that he still faces flogging (30 lashes) and two years’ exile 2,000km from his home. (CBN) On Friday, explosions echoed through the air in Iran, just days after the Muslim-majority country launched some 300 missiles into Israeli airspace — a marked escalation for a country that has, historically, attacked the Jewish state only via proxies, like the Gaza-based terrorist cell Hamas.
Tehran, though, is downplaying the reported Israeli attacks. Jerusalem hasn’t taken responsibility for the explosions, which caused no casualties or injuries, but it’s believed the drone attack came from Israel. Regardless, Iran has not indicated any plans to respond, likely in hopes of avoiding a region-wide war.
There are some Iranians, however, who see war as the only way forward — and not because they oppose Israel, but because they are victims of their own corrupt government, and they see outside forces like the Jewish nation as the only way to topple the evil regime lording over them.
Lily Meschi of Iran Alive Ministries appeared on a recent episode of CBN’s “Faith vs. Culture,” where she revealed what she’s hearing from Iranians on the ground in the Middle East.
Born in Tehran to a nominally Muslim family, Meschi is well acquainted with the feelings of many in the Middle East. Now a Christian, she works closely with Iranians as she shares the Gospel in the region and collaborates with believers in the Islamic nation.

“The Iranian government is totally separated from the citizens,” Meschi said. “The Iranian people are not for the government; they want the government to be toppled. They want to overturn this government, and they are seeking for democracy. Some of them — as heart-wrenching as a war could be — are looking forward to a war. They are saying, ‘We want Israel to attack Iran, because this might be the answer we’re looking for. We’re not living, but we’re just all surviving every single day.’”
She went on to explain many older Iranians she’s spoken to have told her they would “rather die in a war” so the “next generation [can] live a better life of freedom and democracy.”
“Some of them are saying, ‘This could be the answer that we’re looking for, because no matter how many protests, how many people gather in the streets of Iran to protest against the government, they’re not going anywhere,’” Meschi said. “They don’t get support from any other countries. … They feel hopeless, and they feel like this is not life, [so they] might as well do something for the next generation.”

I am writing this on Resurrection Day, Nisan 17, or April 24 on the Roman calendar.
Psalm 40:2 “He lifted me out of the slimy pit, and out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”
Pray all who know the LORD would rejoice that He redeemed us.
Pray they would stand firm on the rock and not deny His Name under pressure.
Psalm 40:3 “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.”
Pray many would see the good changes in us and turn to, or at least consider, our Savior Yeshua.
Pray they would be provoked to jealousy by our joy and new songs.
Psalm 40:4 “Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not look to the proud, in those who turn aside to false gods.”
Pray believers would completely trust in the LORD their maker.
Psalm 40:5 “Many , O LORD, my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you.”
Pray for Yah to do many wonders in response to our prayers, for us and in the presence of unbelievers.
Psalm 40:6 “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have opened; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require.”
Pray the religious Jews would know that the blood of bulls and goats cannot remove sin. Open their ears to hear that only the blood of Messiah can take away their sins.
Psalm 40:7 “Then I said, ‘Here I am, I have come—it is written about me in the scroll.”
Pray unbelievers would read the Word of God and find salvation.
Pray the living Word be available to all people.
Psalm 40:8 “I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”
Pray that those who know Messiah Yeshua would know God’s will in their lives and obey it.
Psalm 40:9 “I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O LORD.”
Pray believers would witness as the Holy Spirit directs and be bold.
Psalm 40:11 “Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD; may your love and your truth always protect me.”
Pray for protection for those being persecuted.
Pray for increased love by believers.
Pray for truth from the media.
Psalm 40:14 “May all who seek to take my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace.”
Pray those persecuting Christians would be put to shame. Pray all their wicked plans would fail. Put them in confusion.
Psalm 40:17 “Yet I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, do not delay.”
Come quickly to rescue the persecuted!

What side are you on? As I watch the conflict not only after October 7 but for many years, I see people going too far to one side or the other. This reminds me of what happened with Joshua in Joshua 5: 13 -15. Joshua was standing close to Jericho, ready to fight against the Canaanites and the Amorites, their enemies. Then he saw a man with a drawn sword in his hand. As Joshua approached him, he asked, “Are you with us or with our enemy?” The man responded, “Neither, I am the commander of the army of the Lord.” This response echoes many times when we try to bring God to our side or when others do the same. What if we stand on the side of the Lord instead of trying to bring God to our side?
This is what James and John did in Luke 9:54-55 when they were with Jesus at a Samaritan village that did not welcome Him as they thought they should. James and John became very angry and suggested calling down fire from heaven to destroy the village. Jesus rebuked them because that was not His mission; He came to give life.
When we stand on the side of the Lord, we can see things from God’s perspective and experience what He has in store for us. When we align with God’s side, we see His heart and seek to fulfill His will, as Micah 6:8, describes: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” He will help us stand with the oppressed without demonizing the oppressor.
What side are you on? When we stand with God, our priorities align, our motivations are pure, and we live among others with the power of His love and forgiveness.
If Jesus were physically present today, I believe He would be with the families of the hostages, with those who have lost loved ones. He would be in Gaza, where 14,000 children have been killed, helping to recover the bodies from under the rubble and comforting the families and orphans who have lost so much, including 10,000 women. What side are you on?
I hope and pray that we will stand on God’s side, recognizing that all human beings are equal, created in God’s image, and made from one blood. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. (Acts 17:26).
We continue to hold the people of Gaza in our prayers, asking for God’s peace, mercy, and comfort to prevail in their lives. We remain committed to serving them in whatever way we can and continue to provide hot meals. We are grateful for your unwavering support.

Human rights organizations have described the Kazakh government as authoritarian, and regularly describe Kazakhstan’s human rights situation as poor.

Tajikistan – Curbs on religious freedom include forcibly shaving beards in public, and hijabs torn off. Recently, society is pressuring the Christian minority to hide in the closet.
Pray that the government would ignore Christian believers.
The ISIS Terror Group ISIS-K draws half its recruits from tiny Tajikistan.
Pray Tajiks would be radical for Jesus, rather than for terrorism.
In Tajikistan, Men under 18 and women are banned from praying in mosques, and group religious instruction at home is forbidden.
Pray that in this vacuum Tajiks will consider the claims of Christ.
Praise – In Kazakhstan there has been church growth. Almost 0 evangelicals in 1990 to 15 thousand in 2010.
Pray the church continues to grow and mature!
Most people in the ‘Stan republics follow a version of Islam strongly influenced by shamans and indigenous practices.
Pray that Muslim extremism would not gain a foothold.
New oil wealth goes to an elite few, but many live in poverty.
As new “Stan” identities grow, alongside Muslim identity, pray that minority rights be respected.
Need for Mercy Ministries. There is a lot of brokenness in these nations. People who lose their documents sometimes are forced to live in garbage dumps.
Pray Christian ministries are allowed to help!
Pray for the power of Christ to break through alcoholism, drug use, and broken families.
Nearly 100 people were killed in the recent border clash between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
Pray for protection to our brothers and sisters living in these nations
Pray for access to Bibles, Christian literature, and training.
Many Christians are from the ethnic Russians or belong to the Orthodox church, the same people who emigrate to other nations.
Pray for new believers from the Asian majorities.
Pray for cultural bridges between different ethnic groups and languages. We are all one in Christ!
Converts from Islam face retribution from the government, Immans, family and neighbors.

Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani from Iran, as he and his family are adjusting from his release from prison, that they may know what God’s will is for them now. Pray for the trauma they had to endure. UPDATE: According to Article 18, once sentenced to death for his “apostasy” has been “pardoned” and released after nearly five years in Tehran’s Evin Prison but told Nadarkhani that he still faces flogging (30 lashes) and two years’ exile 2,000km from his home. The team serves to encourage them by washing their feet in Spirit led prayer. Time is reserved for those on the call to ask questions. We believe this helps to gain a better understanding of the situation that persecuted Christians endure in their specific nations. Q&A also helps us to focus our prayers based on their current needs.

Australia: On 15 April 2024, at approximately 7:15 pm local time, an unnamed person perpetrated a knife attack at Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. During a live-streamed sermon, the attacker walked up to the pulpit, first stabbing Bishop Mar Mari Emmanueland a priest before injuring another churchgoer. While no one was killed, this attack was the second stabbing incident to have taken place in Sydney in three days, following the deadly mass stabbing at Bondi Junction.
The New South Wales Police Force have arrested a 16-year-old male over the attack. They have classified the stabbing as a terrorist attack, but have not revealed the name of the accused, who stated in Arabic after the assault, “if they didn’t insult my prophet, I wouldn’t have come here.” Wakeley is home to many Christians belonging to the Assyrian diaspora, including Bishop Emmanuel himself.
Australian police say they have arrested seven teenagers accused of following a violent extremist ideology in raids around Sydney to protect the community from a potential attack. Read the full report here.

We are constantly reading the harrowing stories of persecuted believers around the world. Sometimes, we are pressed to pray for the believers of a particular country or by name, according to the research found. However, tonight we would like to focus specifically on those issues which various persecuted believers may face daily. We want our prayers to reach believers whose cases may never meet the news or social media. They are all precious to us and indeed precious in the sight of the Lord.

Prayer Points
Pray that believers would feel the comfort and encouragement of the Lord.
Pray that the persecutors would come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Pray that believers would be able to forgive their persecutors for the wrongs they have done.
Pray that believers would fearlessly tell others about Christ.
Pray that they would experience God’s peace, despite their weakness and current circumstances.
Pray that their prayer lives would not be weakened by discouragement and doubt.
Pray that the church would continue to grow despite the problems they face.
Pray for those who continually help persecuted believers. Pray that their efforts would continually be blessed. May God reward them bountifully!
Pray for believers who are brokenhearted because they have lost loved ones, homes, properties, jobs, etc.
Pray that believers who have been imprisoned, beaten, ostracized and otherwise persecuted would be an encouragement to those who are now enduring such.
Pray for those who are imprisoned that they would be comforted by Holy Spirit and that their needs would be met.
Pray for the imprisoned or the accused that God would plead their case and that they would receive justice.
Pray for parents who must raise their children (sometimes alone) while enduring persecution.
Pray that the children continue to serve Christ even when they are pressured by other children and adults not to do so.
Pray for wisdom and strength for pastors and other leaders who continue to lead or serve despite conflict.
Pray for believers who are not under persecution that they would pray for the persecuted brethren and send aid as much as possible.
Pray against loneliness in believers. Pray that they can have deep fellowship with one another and with God.
