A Blessed New Year in the Lord from Voice of the Persecuted and Persecution Watch

Dear Prayer Warriors, I pray for you all through the Bible for a new beginning in this New Year.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.”Ephesians 1:3

16 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success” Joshua 1:8

15 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, 16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. 17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength.” Ephesians 1:15-19

18”Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it. I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:18-19

“There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.” Proverbs 23:18

22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:22-24

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31

“So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” Hebrews 13:6

“He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.” Psalm 40:3

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Corinthians 5:17

“11 Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. 12 Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced.” 1 Chronicles 16:11-12

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

“9 But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

“A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” Proverbs 14:30

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”  Jeremiah 29:11

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.” Psalm 100:4

“22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.’” Lamentations 3:22-24

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6

“34 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35

“9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.” Colossians 3:9-11

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

“May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.” Psalm 20:4

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”Colossians 3:17

And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” Mark 11:25

“13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1

“3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Romans 5:3-5

“1 So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.” 1 Peter 2:1-3

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Hebrews 12:1

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 14:26

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19

Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.” Hebrews 13:3

Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.” Revelation 1:3

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Dear ones, I pray you will continue to search through the Holy Spirit, His Holy Word, for His Word is the Truth and the Truth will set you free from the evil one.

Reminder: There will be no prayer conference call tonight or tomorrow evening. We’ll meet again on the call, Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2024.

Biblical Prayers for the Persecuted Church

(Voice of the Persecuted) You are invited to join us on Saturday, December 30, 2023, in a prayer conference call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.

Colossians 3:1 “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.”

  • Pray believers would set their hearts on the Kingdom of God, not earthly things.
  • We still must live in this world, so pray for provision for believers, especially those persecuted.

Colossians 3:13 “Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the LORD forgave you.”

  • Pray believers would have compassion and love one another.
  • Pray they’ll be able to forgive enemies.

Psalm 146:2 “I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.”

  • Pray for abundant praise to go forth.

Psalm 146:3 “Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save.”

  • Pray for trust in the living God, not man.

Psalm 146:7 “He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free.”

  • Pray for justice in the courts for believers falsely accused.
  •  Pray no believer would go hungry according to God’s Word.
  • Pray prisoners imprisoned because of their faith would be set free.
  • Pray the hostages would be rescued.

Psalm 146:8 “The LORD gives sight to the blind, the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down, the LORD loves the righteous.”

  • Pray for strategies and understanding for believers.
  • Pray for the eyes of unbelievers to be opened so they may be saved.
  • Pray encouragement for those discouraged,
  • Pray believers know more clearly how much Yeshua loves them.

Psalm 146:9 The LORD watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.”

  • Pray for the fatherless and widows.
  • Pray the plans of wicked would fail.

Psalm 146:10 “The LORD reigns forever, your Gods, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the LORD.”

Thank you, Adonai, that you reign, and we will one day reign with You! Amen!

Again, we want to lift-up these persecuted witnesses to the Lord:

  • Leah Sharibu, a prisoner of Boko Haram since 2018. Pray for her release.
  • Alice Loksha Ngaddah, kidnapped February 2019. She is a mother of two, working as a nurse for UNICEF. Pray for her release.
  • Pastor Wang Yi to be released from prison, for his family and for the church.
  • Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani from Iran, as he and his family are adjusting from his release from prison, that they may know what God’s will is for them now. Pray for the trauma they had to endure. UPDATE: According to Article 18, once sentenced to death for his “apostasy” has been “pardoned” and released after nearly five years in Tehran’s Evin Prison, but told Nadarkhani that he still faces flogging (30 lashes) and two years’ exile 2,000km from his home. Read the report here.
  • The Harvest: “37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Matthew 9:37-38

What is Persecution Watch?

Persecution Watch is a U.S. national prayer conference call ministry that prays specifically for the global Persecuted Church. For over a decade, Blaine Scogin led this national network of believers who faithfully pray for the persecuted and the global harvest for the Kingdom of God. The group meets via a free call-in service every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday night at 9pm Eastern time in the United States (please check your time zone). Blaine also served as Prayer Director for Voice of the Persecuted, and the two missions became one. Brother Blaine passed into glory on December 26, 2019. It was truly a blessing for all of us to serve alongside this dear man of God and he will be greatly missed. The prayer mission of Persecution Watch remains an important part of our mission. Voice of the Persecuted is committed to continue the prayer conference call for the persecuted along with the dedicated Persecution Watch prayer warrior team.

Prior to the passing of Brother Blaine, he confirmed the passing of the torch as prayer conference call leader to Nadia Dybvik. Nadia has a burdened heart for the persecuted and is a prayer warrior standing in the gap for them. She joined the Persecution Watch prayer team in 2015 and has been part of the core ever since. Before becoming the prayer call leader, she served in the role of prayer moderator since 2016. Blaine chose Nadia for her faithfulness to pray for the persecuted and her strong commitment to the Persecution Watch mission. We are blessed not only with her gift of prayer, but her genuine love for every brother and sister in Christ that comes on the call to pray. May the Lord continue to bless Nadia and the prayer team in the mission and their personal lives.

“Pray for us” is the number one request that we hear from the persecuted. As the members of the first century Church was moved by the Holy Spirit to pray, we too must continue to serve those suffering persecution by lifting them up to the Lord through prayer.

On occasion, persecuted brothers and sisters are invited to the conference call and share the trials they are facing. The team serves to encourage them by washing their feet in Spirit led prayer. Time is often reserved for those on the call to ask questions. We believe this helps to gain a better understanding of the situation that persecuted Christians endure in their specific nations. Q&A also helps us to focus our prayers based on their current needs.

Persecution Watch also hosts callers who want to pray united from other nations. If your heart is perplexed by the sufferings of our persecuted brothers and sisters, you no longer need to pray alone.

We welcome all who desire to pray for the persecuted church and consider it a joy to pray together with you. If you are new to the call and cannot find your voice, listen in, and pray silently or mute. We are grateful and thank the Lord for bringing us all together to pray in agreement for our persecuted family in Christ. We can all be prayer warriors on this call!

God bless and protect you in your faithfulness to serve.

(Voice of the Persecuted) You are invited to join us on Friday, December 29, in a prayer conference call for the Holy Land hosted by Persecution Watch.

Netanyahu Visits Gaza Strip as Israel Now Hunts for West Bank Terror Tunnels

(CBN News) JERUSALEM, Israel – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited soldiers in the Gaza Strip on Monday. He also presented Israel’s conditions for the post-war administration of Gaza in a newspaper op-ed. Meanwhile, in the north, Israel has been pounding targets across the border in Lebanon, and security forces are now concerned about terror tunnels in the West Bank.

In the newspaper column, published in Monday’s Wall Street Journal, the prime minister summarized Israel’s terms in one sentence: “Hamas must be destroyed, Gaza must be demilitarized, and Palestinian society must be deradicalized.”

Netanyahu insisted Israel would continue to “act in full compliance with international law” in destroying Hamas, but said that challenge was complicated because of Hamas’s use of civilians as human shields.

He cautioned, “Blaming Israel for these casualties will only encourage Hamas and other terror organizations around the world to use human shields,” and said the international community “must place the blame for these casualties squarely on Hamas.”

Concerning a demilitarized Gaza, Netanyahu wrote, “Israel must ensure that the territory is never again used as a base to attack it,” and explained that would require setting up a temporary security zone on Gaza’s perimeter and providing for border inspection mechanisms between Gaza and Egypt.

He also called the expectation voiced by the Biden administration and others that the Palestinian Authority would demilitarize Gaza a “pipe dream,” charging, “It currently funds and glorifies terrorism in Judea and Samaria and educates Palestinian children to seek the destruction of Israel.”

The prime minister’s third condition is that Palestinian society must be deradicalized. He said that goal calls for “courageous and moral leadership,” pointing out that “Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas can’t even bring himself to condemn the Oct. 7 atrocities.”

Netanyahu suggested the process of deradicalizing the society begins in the schools, and highlighted the success the allies had in transforming societies in post-World War II Germany and Japan. Read more

Former Hezbollah Fighter Recalls Supernatural Encounter with Jesus: ‘God Didn’t Design Us to Hate’.

(CBN News) In early October, Afshin Javid was visiting Israel with his ministry Cyrus Call, which promotes friendship between Persians and Jews. But like millions of others, he found himself in the middle of a war when Hamas launched a bloody attack on Oct. 7.

As a former Hezbollah fighter, Afshin himself is no stranger to violence. He sat down with CBN News to tell his story.

“I was on my way to the United States to convert Christians to Islam, and I had 30 illegal passports at that time. I was arrested and put in jail in Malaysia. I was a dedicated Muslim who not only prayed the prayers, but I read the Koran once every ten days cover to cover. So I was very dedicated in my time in jail,” Javid said.

“One day, as I’m praying, a man appears in front of me – normal size, but his being shines like light. This light is not a normal light. This light carried identity in it. And you knew that he is holy and instantaneously, I knew I am not. Even though I had prayed so many prayers, even though I had fasted so much and I had read the Koran and I had volunteered to work on landmines or I had participated in hanging people trying to please Allah, I knew, even though I have kept all the rules and regulation of Islam, I knew I am not just and I’m not holy and I knew the only just thing for him to do is to kill me,” he recalled. Read more

(From Pastor Hanna) Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I pray this message finds you in good health and spirits. Today, I am humbled to share with you a brief devotion, especially meaningful during this time of the year, as we unite in prayer for our beloved brothers and sisters enduring challenging circumstances in Gaza.

May this devotion serve as a source of inspiration and blessing for you.

“When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. ‘Get up,’ he said, ‘take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.’ So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘Out of Egypt I called my son.’” (Matthew 2:13-15)

The account above tells us of baby Jesus, Mary, and Joseph fleeing to Egypt to escape the threat of King Herod. This narrative, while ancient, resonates deeply with the struggles faced by many people today in war-torn Gaza.

In Gaza, people are being told to flee to safety, but tragically, they have nowhere to escape to. This is a harsh reality that parallels the desperation faced by Mary and Joseph. They had a destination, Egypt, where they could find refuge, but the people in Gaza today have no such sanctuary within their besieged land.

As Christians, we find solace in knowing that, like Mary and Joseph, we have a place of refuge — the “ark of the cross.” This concept is akin to Noah’s ark, where he found safety amidst chaos and danger. Our safety comes through what Jesus did for us on the cross. Just as Noah felt secure within the ark, we, too, find protection under the power of Christ’s sacrifice.

Matthew reminds us of the dilemma faced by those who have nowhere to go when danger threatens. In celebrating the birth of Jesus, we are celebrating the goodness of God, who entered human history through the incarnation. Jesus came to bring God to the people and people to God, offering hope and salvation.

In the time of Jesus’s birth, the circumstances were challenging, with King Herod and Roman occupation looming over the land. There are parallels in present-day Palestine under Israeli occupation. Mary and Joseph’s swift escape to Egypt after the visitation of the magi demonstrates the immediacy of their need for refuge.

For some of us who have experienced persecution, there might have been moments when God blessed our ministries and we felt encouraged. However, when danger arose, we, like Mary and Joseph, had to flee to safety. Our personal experiences can help us empathize with the people of Gaza who lack a safe haven today.

As we meditate on the Advent season and the birth of Jesus, let us remember those who, like the Holy Family, have no place to escape. Even churches, once seen as sanctuaries, are not immune to the violence. We must pray for peace and for the safety of all people, especially those in conflict zones like Gaza.

In the midst of turmoil, we can echo the sentiment of a leader from Gaza Baptist Church: “In the midst of war, we feel we are Noah’s ark because of Jesus.” The hope of the cross, the resurrection, and the protection found in Christ’s sacrifice can be our refuge, even when the world seems chaotic and dangerous. May we extend that hope and refuge to those in need, just as Mary and Joseph found refuge in Egypt, and just as we have found it in the ark of the cross.

With heartfelt blessings,

Pastor Hanna Massad, Founder & President Christian Mission to Gaza

Pray for Saudi Arabia and Christians living there

(Voice of the Persecuted) You are invited to join us on Thursday, December 28 2023, in a prayer conference call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia:

Fifth-largest country in Asia, and the largest in the Middle East

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was founded in 1932-uniting four regions through a series of conquests.

The ultraconservative Wahhabi religious movement within Sunni Islam was exported around the world, tapering off in the 2000s.

A founding member of OPEC in 1960, and still the leading power in OPEC

Saudi Arabia sees itself as protector of Islam’s two holiest sites: Mecca and Medina

The government mandates Muslim and non-Muslim observance of Sharia law

Freedom House’s annual survey of political and civil rights consistently ranked Saudi Arabia among the “worst of the worst”.

Please Pray for:

  • Saudi Arabia is a destination for slave labor and sexual exploitation-often people from Central Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Philippines arrive as domestic servants or other low-skilled laborers, then are forced into sexual slavery.
  • Pray for the end of effective slavery in Saudi Arabia.
  • Pray for the protection of those who travel there to work.

Saudi Arabian law does not religious freedom, and the public practice of non-Muslim religions is actively prohibited-pray freedom for Christian workers to have the freedom to meet.

In 2016, the Saudi Arabian government curtailed the influence of the Wahhabi religious establishment and restricted the activities of the morality police and launched various Westernization policies.

  • Pray for the weakening of the morality police!

Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman has brought about radical changes to Saudi Arabia such as allowing women to drive and opening cinemas. He is starting to bring the kingdom in line with the rest of the world.

  • Pray these new developments would bring greater openness to the Gospel.

One friend who often works there, as an American engineer, is not allowed to bring in Bibles, even for himself.

  • Pray that God’s Word would be available in Saudi Arabia.
  • Pray Mecca and Medina would lose it’s spiritual power over the Muslim World.
  • Pray for Saudis who feel hopeless and angry won’t be lured into terrorism groups, but instead be drawn to Jesus who is the only source of hope.
  • Pray for the local believers who feel alone or persecuted will stand firm in their faith.
  • Pray that Muslims around Christians will see their light and become believers as well.

Again, we want to lift-up these persecuted witnesses to the Lord:

  • PRAISE REPORT! Mauritanian Christians: (Living Stones International) Dear Praying Friends, We recently received news that the Mauritanian Christians who were arrested and issued a judgement of execution were released by the higher authorities in the government. After 18 days in prison they were allowed to return to their homes and their families. Praise God! Their conviction with the sentence of death drew international attention and that caused the government of Mauritania to release all 23 of the men and women. They were told as a condition of their release that they would agree to keep their faith and worship private and to not convert others to Christianity. We are so grateful to all of you who prayed for these dear saints in Christ. Please keep praying for these Believers. Pray that they would remain strong in their faith, wise in their witness, and that their numbers would continue to increase. Thank you for your care for the Body of Christ, Dr. Pat and Brother Dave

Urgent Prayer Needs For Nigerian Christians Under Constant Attack

(Voice of the Persecuted) You are invited to join us on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, in a prayer conference call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.

Dear Prayer Warriors, please join us, tonight, to pray for the urgent prayer needs of Nigerian Christians in Plateau State. Hundreds of terrorists attacked Christian communities beginning on Saturday night (Dec. 23) as the hapless Christians were preparing for Christmas programs lined up by their pastors and continued through Monday (Dec. 25). Most of the Christians killed were women, children, and the elderly. Read full report here

160 People Massacred in Christian Areas of Plateau State, Nigeria

Burial on Christmas Day, 2023 of Christians slain in NTV village, Plateau state, Nigeria. (Christian Daily News-Morning Star News)

(Christian Daily InternationalMorning Star News) – Terrorists massacred 160 people, many of them preparing for church Christmas programs, Saturday night (Dec. 23) through Monday (Dec. 25) in coordinated attacks on predominantly Christian areas in Plateau state, Nigeria, sources said.

Church pastors were killed and hundreds of houses were destroyed in the massacres in villages of Barkin Ladi, Bokkos and Mangu counties, officials and residents said. The assailants killed the Rev. Solomon Gushe of Baptist Church in Dares village along with nine of his family members, said Bokkos County resident Dawzino Mallau.

“Some pastors were killed, and another pastor and his wife and five children were killed during these attacks,” Mallau told Christian Daily International-Morning Star News in a text message. “These terrorists who attacked these Christian communities were in the hundreds, and they carried out the attacks as the hapless Christians were preparing for Christmas programs lined up by their pastors.”

Most of the Christians killed were women, children and the elderly unable to escape, he said.

Alfred Mashat, another resident of the Bokkos area, said hundreds of houses were destroyed.

“About 160 Christians in these villages were killed by the terrorists,” Mashat said in a text message to Christian Daily International-Morning Star News. “We believe they are carrying out these attacks alongside armed Muslim Fulani herdsmen.”

Among the predominantly Christian villages attacked, he said, were NTV, Maiyanga, Ruku, Hurum, Darwat, Dares, Chirang, Ruwi, Yelwa, Ndun, Ngyong, Murfet, Makundary, Tamiso, Chiang, Tahore, Gawarba, Dares, Meyenga, Darwat and Butura Kampani.

Mashat identified some of the Christians killed in the attack on Maiyanga village as Sati Solomon Langweng, David Jallang, Gauis Adamu, Mafulul Langweng, Nafor James Markut, Matawal Gauis Adamu, Fidelis Solomon Jallang, Emmanuel Amos Jallang, Sule Shahu, Mildred James Markut, Maren Paul Mashok, Samuel Mamot and Machief Mangut.

Four Christians slain in Daruwat village he could identify only as Tanko, Haruna, John and Salo.

Local officials on Monday (Dec. 25) confirmed the attacks, reportedly stating that at least 160 people were slain. Monday Kassah, head of the local government in Bokkos, told AFP that 113 people had been killed there in “well-coordinated” attacks in at least 20 villages.

More than 300 wounded people were rushed to hospitals in Bokkos, Jos and Barkin Ladi, he said. Dickson Chollom, a member of the state parliament, told AFP that at least 50 people were reported dead in villages in the area, while Bokkos area resident Solomon Musa told Christian Daily International-Morning Star News that the bodies of 60 Christians in the Bokkos Council area were recovered and buried.

“Another 26 corpses were buried in Barkin Ladi Council area on Christmas Day,” Musa said. “On Saturday, Dec. 23, Muslim terrorists attacked Christian villages in Bokkos Local Government Area, attacks that continued to Christmas Day.”

In Bokkos LGA’s Ruwi village, 16 Christians were killed, many others were wounded and many houses were destroyed, he said.

Alfred Alabo, spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, said in a press statement that the assailants on Sunday night (Dec. 24) attacked 12 villages in the Bokkos LGA: Ndun, Ngyong, Murfet, Makundary, Tamiso, Chiang, Tahore, Gawarba, Dares, Meyenga, Darwat and Butura Kampani. That same hour, at about 10:45 p.m. three villages in Barkin Ladi LGA were attacked, he said: NTV, Hurum and Darawat.

In Bokkos LGA, 221 houses were set ablaze, 27 motorcycles and eight other motor vehicles were burned, and more than 79 persons were killed, Alabo said, adding that in Barkin Ladi LGA, 17 deaths were initially recorded.

Plateau Gov. Caleb Mutfwang on Monday (Dec. 25) said that at least 50 persons had been killed in Mangu and Bokkos counties in the prior 48 hours.

“This is unacceptable. Enough is enough. These stupid, senseless and unprovoked acts must stop,” Mutfwang said, vowing to “strengthen security agencies in the efforts in tackling insecurity in the state.”

The assailants are described locally as “bandits,” shorthand for a mix of criminal elements including ethnic Fulani herders hit by drought and dwindling land for their cattle. Riding motorcycles and well-armed with sophisticated weapons obtained from criminal elements outside of Nigeria, some of the predominantly Muslim assailants are said to be mercenaries from Chad or Niger.

Estimated to number in the tens of thousands, such assailants have been active in northern Nigeria for more than a decade but have increasingly expanded into Plateau, Benue and other states, including some in southern Nigeria. Christian leaders and other observers also believe elements of Islamic extremist group Boko Haram and a faction aligned with the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) form part of some of the attacking criminal gangs.

Christian leaders in Nigeria have said they believe herdsmen attacks on Christian communities in the Middle Belt are inspired by their desire to forcefully take over Christians’ lands and impose Islam as desertification has made it difficult for them to sustain their herds.

Nigeria led the world in Christians killed for their faith in 2022, with 5,014, according to Open Doors’ 2023 World Watch List (WWL) report. It also led the world in Christians abducted (4,726), sexually assaulted or harassed, forcibly married or physically or mentally abused, and it had the most homes and businesses attacked for faith-based reasons. As in the previous year, Nigeria had the second most church attacks and internally displaced people.

In the 2023 World Watch List of the countries where it is most difficult to be a Christian, Nigeria jumped to sixth place, its highest ranking ever, from No. 7 the previous year.

“Militants from the Fulani, Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and others conduct raids on Christian communities, killing, maiming, raping and kidnapping for ransom or sexual slavery,” the WWL report noted. “This year has also seen this violence spill over into the Christian-majority south of the nation… Nigeria’s government continues to deny this is religious persecution, so violations of Christians’ rights are carried out with impunity.”

Numbering in the millions across Nigeria and the Sahel, predominantly Muslim Fulani comprise hundreds of clans of many different lineages who do not hold extremist views, but some Fulani do adhere to radical Islamist ideology, the United Kingdom’s All-Party Parliamentary Group for International Freedom or Belief (APPG) noted in a 2020 report.

“They adopt a comparable strategy to Boko Haram and ISWAP and demonstrate a clear intent to target Christians and potent symbols of Christian identity,” the APPG report states.

What does persecution look like in Pakistan?

(Voice of the Persecuted) You are invited to join us on Tuesday December 26, 2023, in a prayer conference call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.

In Pakistan, Christians are considered second-class citizens and are discriminated against in every aspect of public and private life. Although there were no major attacks against churches last year, there are almost constant attacks against individuals. Believers who have converted from Islam are the most vulnerable to persecution.

Christian women and girls are particularly vulnerable in Pakistan. Reports indicate there is a silent epidemic of kidnappings, forced marriages and forced conversion of Christian girls and women in Pakistan. These ‘marriages’ mean that a girl’s parents don’t have legal recourse to rescue their (often underage) daughter – and it is a widely-used tactic to persecute minority faith communities, such as Christians.

Pakistan’s infamous blasphemy laws are increasingly being leveraged to accuse Christians and other non-Muslims of insulting the Prophet Mohammed or the Quran – punishment can be the death penalty. False accusations are often made to target Christians after an unrelated dispute, and even a false accusation can lead to mob violence.

Christian women and girls are constantly at risk of sexual assault, abduction and forced conversion. This was brought to the world’s attention in 2020 when 13-year-old Arzoo was taken from her parents by a 44-year-old Muslim man. Two days later, Arzoo’s father was informed that the abductor had produced a marriage certificate stating Arzoo was 18 and had converted to Islam. A court gave custody to the ‘husband’.

Thankfully, after outcry both inside and outside Pakistan, judges ordered Arzoo’s release. But many families never see their girls again, as the authorities rarely bring the perpetrators to justice. And for those like Arzoo who do escape, the trauma of what they went through places a huge shadow over their lives.

Christian men are particularly vulnerable to being falsely accused under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws. They are often compelled to take lower-state jobs referred to as ‘chura’, a derogatory word meaning ‘filthy’. Church leaders can be arrested if they don’t abide by the authorities’ wishes, and these arrests are often intended to act as warnings to intimidate the Christian minority. (source)

  • Pray for the salvation of Pakistan’s leaders and people of influence.
  • Pray that all Pakistanis would come to the saving knowledge of the truth and reject other religious lies which make them hateful towards others who don’t follow those teachings.
  • Pray that God would protect believers from the constant oppression they face and that they would not be consumed by the spirit of fear.
  • Pray for the strength and comfort of believers from a Muslim background.
  • Pray for God’s protection over those women and girls who are vulnerable of being kidnapped, raped, or forced into marriage.
  • Pray for those such as Arzoo who have endured being kidnapped, raped, or forced into marriage. Pray for their healing from such a traumatic experience.
  • Pray that there would be more international outcry about Pakistan’s injustice towards believers pressing them to do what is right for them.
  • Pray that those persons who have been wrongfully imprisoned because of the blasphemy laws would be set free, uncondemned, and those laws would be abolished.
  • Pray that God would grant Christian men favor with employers so that would not only give them work which is degrading.
  • Pray that those who do have to do filthy work would be able to do so with grace and with the joy of the Lord in their hearts.
  • Pray for strength, wisdom, and discernment in church leaders as they watch over God’s people in such a harsh environment.
  • Pray that the church would grow stronger even though the authorities try to intimidate them out of practicing their faith.
  • Pray that God would frustrate the plans of the wicked ones so that they do not prevail against the church.
  • Pray for the continued success and support of NGOs who help the persecuted brethren.

Merry Christmas from Voice of the Persecuted and the Persecution Watch Prayer Warrior Team

(Voice of the Persecuted) Isaiah 60:1 “Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. John 1:4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.  Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

In the words of Corrie Ten Boom, “Who can add to Christmas? The perfect motive is that God so loved the world. The perfect gift is that He gave His only Son. The only requirement is to believe in Him. The reward of faith is that you shall have everlasting life.”

All over the world, persecuted believers are worshiping God for the greatest gift ever given to mankind. They count their suffering worthy to be in Him as part of the Body of Christ. As we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, please take a moment to remember and pray for those who are suffering in the name of Jesus.

This Christmas, let us reflect not on the trials, but on all God’s blessings in our lives. Let us praise the Lord for His faithfulness to give hope to the afflicted, to bind up the brokenhearted, bring liberty to captives and life to the lost. We thank God for comforting all who mourn, giving them strength and peace instead of mourning with the ability to praise instead of a spirit of fainting. He is always with us in the storm.

To all our persecuted brothers and sisters, prayer warriors, workers in the field, and the Body of Christ throughout the world, as you put your trust fully in the LORD, may your faith be unshakable, and peace be your gift, this Christmas and all through the year.

Lois Kanalos, Founder of Voice of the Persecuted and Nadia Dybvik, Persecution Watch Prayer Call Leader

Note: Dear Prayer Warrior’s, there will be no prayer calls on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

  • Blessed Christmas, greetings to all you wonderful Prayer warriors. I am more than grateful to God for assigning me to this segment of the army. I love you all so much!
