Persecution Watch: Pray for Believers in the DRC

(Voice of the Persecuted) You are invited to join us on Thursday, June 29, 2023, in a prayer conference call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO (DRC)

Population: 92 million, Christians 87 million

While the DRC is one of Africa’s largest countries geographically with a Christian-majority population, Islamist groups severely persecute Christians along the DRC’s eastern border -Tanzania and Uganda, which are hostile to Christianity. One of the principal persecutors is the Islamist Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). The ADF is active in the Rwenzori Mountain area and seeks to establish Islamic law throughout the region. When rebels capture groups of people, they often release Muslims while killing Christians who refuse to convert. There are more than 100 other armed groups operating in the DRC who also target Christians.

American consumers are linked, in a way, to the armed violence & slavery that grips parts of the DRC. Many everyday products contain minerals mined by Congolese slaves, many of them are minors – child labor.

Population is 90 percent Christian, with 5 percent ethnic religions, but subject to Islamic extremist persecution.

The church is under immense pressure in the eastern DRC. In areas controlled by the ADF, Christian villages have been raided, churches destroyed, and hundreds of believers brutally killed. Dozens of local Christians have been abducted by the ADF and told to recant their faith in Christ and convert to Islam. Those abducted have witnessed horrific acts of violence against fellow Christians. Prior to the outbreak of violence, one church denomination had 25 churches in the Beni area; today they have eight. Another denomination had 54 churches and now has 11. Other denominations report similar patterns.

Félix Tshisekedi is a special Congolese politician who has been the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 24 January 2019 and exercises his power as a dictator.

  • Pray to the Lord convict Felix Tshisekedi to protect Christians from the ADF – Allied Democratic Forces.
  • Pray to the Lord that the government will curb the violence against Christians in the northeastern provinces, which is perpetrated by the ADF.
  • Pray to the LORD for Grace, for those who was abducted and watched her family members murdered by Islamists.
  • Pray to the Lord for pastors whose church buildings have been destroyed by Islamists.
  • Pray to the Lord for the children of two local missionaries who were martyred and for the grieving parents.
  • Pray to the Lord for the nearly 2,000 internally displaced believers who fled widespread Islamist attacks.
  • Pray to the Lord for the pastors who had– have the courage to remain in the ADF controlled areas to lead their churches.
  • Pray to the Lord to give leaders wisdom to prepare their churches for persecution.
  • Pray to the Lord for NGOs to provide trauma counseling, spiritual and physical support.
  • Pray to the Lord for the Lords for those who are counseling traumatized believers. Ask that the Lord will equip them with compassion and insight to minister to the Christians who walked through much for their faith.
  • Pray for more Bibles, also in children editions, in the Swahili language which are much needed in the rural areas.
  • Pray to the Lord that Christians and congregations would reflect Christ’s love, be the light in the darkness for hope and healing.
  • Pray the Lord will protect His believers who share the gospel in a hostile environment.
  • Pray to the Lord to encourage His believers not to compromise their faith because of the Islamic threat to save their lives.

Again, we want to lift-up these persecuted witnesses to the Lord:

  • Leah Sharibu, a prisoner of Boko Haram since 2018. Pray for her release.
  • Alice Loksha Ngaddah, kidnapped February 2019. She is a mother of two, working as a nurse for UNICEF. Pray for her release.
  • Pray for Pastor Wang Yi to be released from prison.
  • For Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani from Iran, as he and his family are adjusting from his release from prison, that they may know what God’s will is for them now. Pray for the trauma they had to endure. UPDATE: According to Article 18, once sentenced to death for his “apostasy” has been “pardoned” and released after nearly five years in Tehran’s Evin Prison, but told Nadarkhani that he still faces flogging (30 lashes) and two years’ exile 2,000km from his home. Read the report here.
  • UPDATE (March 17, 2023): Ryan Kolher, a pilot for the U.S.-based ministry Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF), and two of the ministry’s South African volunteers were released from a Mozambican prison Tuesday afternoon, the organization announced. The trio had been held at a high-security prison inside the southeastern African country for four months. Their release is a provisional one and they are required to remain in the country, while their case is still ongoing, according to MAF. Kolher is said to be “doing well” following his release and now is with his wife, Annabel.

What is Persecution Watch?

moved by the Holy Spirit to pray, we too must continue to serve those suffering persecution by lifting them up to the Lord through prayer.

On occasion, persecuted brothers and sisters have been invited on the conference call to share the trials they are facing. The team serves to encourage them by washing their feet in Spirit led prayer. Time is often reserved for those on the call to ask questions. We believe this helps to gain a better understanding of the situation that persecuted Christians endure in their specific nations. Q&A also helps us to focus our prayers based on their current needs.

Persecution Watch also hosts callers who want to pray united from other nations. If your heart is perplexed by the sufferings of our persecuted brothers and sisters, you no longer need to pray alone.

We welcome all who desire to pray for the persecuted church and consider it a joy to pray together with you. If you are new to the call and cannot find your voice, listen, and pray silently, or on mute. We are grateful and thank the Lord for bringing us all together to pray in agreement for our persecuted family in Christ. We can all be prayer warriors on this call!

God bless and protect you in your faithfulness to serve.

Persecution Watch: Pray for Egypt

(Voice of the Persecuted) You are invited to join us on Tuesday June 27, 2023, in a prayer conference call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.

Egypt: Population106,437,241- Muslim 90%, Christian 9%, Agnostic 1%

Egypt’s ancient legacy and span of achievements is truly astounding. This remarkable nation is often known by the world for its ancient pyramids, nearly 3,000 years of history, and the Biblical story of the deliverance of the Israelites. Though it has a predominantly desert landscape, farms and sprawling cities line the banks of the Nile River. Egypt remains the most populous country in the Arab world and holds great regional and global influence. What happens here has the potential to impact the entire Muslim world!

The Arab Spring (a series of anti-government protests and uprisings across the Middle East starting in 2011) sparked political upheaval across the Arab world. Egypt was no exception, erupting in mass protests that led to the ousting of then President Hosni Mubarak. Clashes between the Muslim Brotherhood protesters and the brutally reactive military left hundreds dead. Conflict continues to polarize the nation. Amid an increasingly repressive government, Egypt is terrorized by Islamic extremism. Following the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi in 2013, militants linked to the Islamic State (IS) led an insurgency, bringing widespread terror and the tragic deaths of thousands. Political unrest has inhibited the nation from addressing economic problems, corruption, and strained resources. Approximately a quarter of the population lives in poverty, only exacerbated by the water crisis. Farmers face imprisonment or hunger due to the regulations on crops that require more water. In addition to this tragedy, forced labor and sex trafficking leaves street children especially vulnerable.

Egypt was a majority-Christian nation for over 1,000 years, and today it remains home to the Middle East’s largest body of Christians – the Coptic Church (12%). Evangelical Christianity is on the rise, though still only about 3% of the population. Yet Islam remains the state religion and the faith of 87% of its people. Egypt is also often seen as the intellectual center for Sunni Islam. Though the Egyptian Church has endured persecution for over 2,000 years, recent instability and the presence of the Islamic State have intensified their suffering. Horrific scenes of church bombings have brought the plight of Egyptian Christians to the world stage. However, even as persecution increases, so does the number of Muslims turning to Christ! Scripture is more accessible than ever, and the Church is growing in unity across theological differences.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for a stable and trustworthy government to act in the interest of all its people.
  • Pray for the Church to continue to overcome evil with divine forgiveness and love.
  • Pray for Jesus to reveal Himself to an unprecedented number of Muslims disillusioned by Islamic State.

If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.  – John 14:14

Again, we want to lift-up these persecuted witnesses to the Lord:

Persecution Watch: Praying for Believers in Vietnam

(Voice of the Persecuted) You are invited to join us on Thursday June 22, 2023, in a prayer conference call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.

Population: 99 million, Christians 9.2 million

Vietnam has a repressive Communist government that actively restricts Christian worship in many ways. While Christian worship is legal, the government views Christians and churches as a threat to its power and control. Minority tribal groups, such as the Hmong, generally face the most violent and harsh forms of persecution, while Christians in urban centers experience pressure and harassment instead of violent opposition. Churches continue to grow as believers faithfully reach out despite these challenges.

Most Vietnamese people practice a blend of ancestor worship and Buddhism. Only 2.5 percent of the population are evangelical Christians. The government imposes some restrictions, while local authorities and community members violently persecute Christians in rural areas. Christian converts are persecuted by family members.

PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray for President Vo Van Thorng who was on March 2nd of this year elected to a 5-year term, that he and his cabinet officers will realize that Christianity is not a threat to their power.
  • Pray to the Lord that He will frustrate and foil the authorities who try to suppress and restrict Christians lives particularly in the rural areas.
  • Pray to the Lord that Christians can be a light in the darkness of people who practice a blend of ancestor worship and Buddhism.
  • Pray to the Lord that new believers will stand strong while facing family rejection, evictions and beatings.
  • Pray that the Lord will protect and encourage church leaders to have a fruitful ministry and remain strong in faith.
  • Pray to the Lord that His hand of protection is on the tribal minority groups such as the Hmong, who experience the most violent and harsh form of persecution.
  • Pray to the Lord for new believers experiencing persecution through the loss of homes, land and livelihood so that they do not become discouraged and focus on Him as well as experience the love and support of fellow believers.
  • Pray to the Lord that more Bibles in major tribal languages (106 indigenous languages) will be printed and distributed to meet the growing need.
  • Pray to the Lord to have His hand of protection on believers who covertly distribute Bibles in areas tightly controlled by the government.
  • Pray to the Lord for persecuted believers to receive medical treatment, as well as spiritual support.
  • Pray to the Lord to comfort the families of believers who are imprisoned because of their faith. Draw them near to Him.
  • Pray to the Lord that He will shield the work of the NGOs from the authorities support as they
  • Support and minister to the saints.
  • Pray to the Lord for good internet access and messages that resonate with both Christians and Seekers.
  • Pray to the Lord to protect, guide, and bless the Oral Bible teaching teams who minister to the minorities in the rural areas.
  • Pray to the Lord that He will mightily grow and blossom His church in Vietnam and that He will thwart the authorities in restricting Christianity.

Again, we want to lift-up these persecuted witnesses to the Lord:

Persecution Watch: Prayer for Turkey

(Voice of the Persecuted) You are invited to join us on Saturday June 17, 2023, in a prayer conference call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.

Turkey is a transcontinental country located mainly in Western Asia, with a small portion in Southeast Europe. It shares borders with eight countries. Kurds are the largest minority.

Population: 84 million (70% Turks, 19% Kurds, 82% Muslim, 2% Christian

Much of the New Testament was written either in or to churches in what is now modern-day Turkey, but now Turkish believers’ number only a few thousand.

PRAYER POINTS

  • Church leaders– that God would give them wisdom, understanding and strength to act on and carry out their convictions.
  • Pray that the Church would UNITE as one mind, one body, “having everything in common”, unafraid, unshaken & collectively praying for boldness to continue spreading light and life in this present darkness.
  • Pray that in this time of uncertainty, fear, anxiety, and unrest, that the Church would lean into him, pursue peace, step out in bold confidence, proclaiming fearless VICTORY over the darkness of our situation- because we are grounded in WHO HE IS and what HE’S DONE
  •  Jesus would create and mature servants’ hearts that would propel believers into lives of ministry and would actively seek the wellbeing of others.
  • Pray that the Church will remember why we’re here. This is our temporary home, but it is our home for a reason!
  • Even though the government today remains secular, there is increasing religious and social pressure against the church and local believers.
  • Pray for missionaries to continue, as visa issues are becoming more and more difficult
  • The lack of obvious fruit in Turkey can frustrate and discourage Christian workers, and there is much Christian worker turnover.
  • Please pray for grace and strength to continue faithfully, day after day.
  • Pray for outreach among the millions of refugees currently residing in Turkey, especially from Syria and Iran. Pray that local believers would step out in faith, trusting that God will lead them to the right person to tell about their belief in Jesus.
  • The importance of cleanliness in Islam reflects a deep desire to be acceptable to God. Pray for Turks to discover the once-for-all cleansing of Jesus’ blood, and our acceptance through Jesus’ righteousness. John 13.8-10, Hebrews 10.19-22
  • Turkey is in the process of joining the EU, who puts pressure on Turkey for human rights – but for the last decade, President Erdoğan has depended on the support of nationalists and Islamists.  Pray that Turkey does not fall under Sharia law.
  • Turkey’s military has a history of taking over the government. Pray that future changes do not eliminate Christians’ few legal rights.
  • Turkey’s historic churches survived, until the 20th century.  Pray that the Holy Spirit would restore everything Satan stole!
  • There is revival among the Kurds in northern Iraq – pray it would spread to the larger number of Kurds in Turkey.
  • Many Turks and Kurds have emigrated to Europe in the last seventy years, especially to Germany. Pray Western believers would reach out to their new neighbors.
  • It is illegal for an adult to evangelize children. Pray for 30,000 street kids living in Istanbul.

SCRIPTURE TO PRAY THROUGH:

James 1:2-4 “Consider it pure joy my brothers, when you face trials of various kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete”.

If you are new to the call and cannot find your voice, listen and pray silently or on mute. We are grateful and thank the Lord for bringing us all together to pray in agreement for our persecuted family in Christ. We can all be prayer warriors on this call!

God bless and protect you in your faithfulness to serve.

Praying for Believers in Bangladesh

(Voice of the Persecuted) You are invited to join us on Thursday June 15, 2023, in a prayer conference call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.

BANGLADESH: Population: 171 million, Christians 1.1 million

Christians are a tiny minority in Bangladesh – in the country’s population of 168 million, just 0.5 percent are believers.

Bangladeshi society remains patriarchal, despite the country being led by female politicians for many years. Christian women and girls are highly vulnerable to persecution from their family and local community, particularly if these Christians are converts, who are deemed to have ‘betrayed’ their culture and religion. This persecution can include harassment, sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, forced marriage or divorce, house arrest and abduction.

Many Christian men are attacked for converting from Islam, which is the majority religion in Bangladesh. The wider communal pressure – including from Muslim leaders – forces some men to flee their homes. Men can also be falsely accused of bribing people into becoming Christians and even drug dealing as a way of getting the police on their case. Church leaders especially are at risk of arrest, although imprisonment is rare. Protestant churches that are engaged in outreach among Muslim communities can also face persecution. The arrest of church leaders can destabilize Christian communities and make them feel afraid to gather for worship.

Even other denominations which have historically faced less persecution in Bangladesh, such as those affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, are increasingly facing attacks and death threats.

Example of persecution: Jashim (25) from Bangladesh was at home when family members began attacking him to force him to renounce his new faith in Jesus – but he bravely refused.

This further angered his persecutors, who numbered 50-60 people. They stabbed and beat him, and even tried to strangle him. Jashim miraculously escaped. On returning home, Jashim was greeted by police who blamed him for the attack because it revolved around his conversion from Islam to Christianity. When the police left, Jashim was attacked even more violently than before.

Jashim had a short spell in hospital before returning home to recover. His three children were traumatized by their father’s ordeal. Jashim’s story reflects how the church in Bangladesh is growing – but also how costly it can be to follow Jesus, with persecution often coming from those closest to home.

PRAYER POINTS

  • Please pray for Shahabuddin Chuppu, a retired judge, who in April of this year was sworn in as    the president of Bangladesh, that the Lord will touch him to uphold the law and protect Christians.
  • Pray that the new president will be enforcing the law that prohibits child labor for children under the age of 14. Child labor in Bangladesh is significant, with an estimated 3 plus million children aged 5 to 14 in the workforce.
  • Pray for the Lord to protect Bangladeshi who have converted to Christianity from hostility and violence for their decision to follow Jesus.
  • Pray to the Lord to keep pastors safe from being targeted by radical Muslims, spoil and foil their plans.
  • Pray to the Lord for MBB believers that the Lord will show them opportunities to share the Jesus that they have found with other Muslims.
  • Pray to the Lord to retrain the radical Muslims to cease attacking church buildings, that churches will again become places to safely worship Him.
  • Pray to the Lord that he will show believers creative ways to meet and worship together and have fellowship.
  • Pray for the protection of house church leaders to grow in faith and passion to disciple new believers.
  • Pray to the Lord for improved economic conditions as poverty, loss of jobs are key factors that drive many families to marry off their children early to alleviate economic hardship.
  • Pray to the Lord to convict the human traffickers who are recruiting and transporting women and children for profit and personal gain. Pray that the government will be pressured to strictly enforce traffickers and ensure punitive measures against the traffickers.
  • Pray to the Lord that His believers will be protected from false accusations such as drug dealing.
  • Pray that the Lord will give wisdom to the NGOs on how to support the persecuted believers.
  • Pray that the Lord will pour fresh hope into the believers’ hearts and give them fresh revelations of Your love.
  • Pray to the Lord to heal all those who remain impacted by attacks. To give them strength to persevere and a glimpse into the ways in which You are using their difficult experiences for good.
  • Pray to the Lord Jesus, and thank Him that, despite the persecution many Christians in Bangladesh face, many people are coming to know You and accept you Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and savior.
  • Pray that the Lord will strengthen and grow His church in Bangladesh and that the forces of darkness do not prevail.

Interceding for the Persecuted Church

(Voice of the Persecuted) You are invited to join us on Tuesday June 13, 2023, in a prayer conference call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.

And He came to his disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, ” So you men could not keep watch with me for one hour? Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation, the Spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:40 -41

Many of us have often read these scriptures. At the time when the Lord Jesus needed his three closest friends to pray for him, these disciples were exhausted from sorrow and found sleeping. One can only imagine that Jesus was grieved much in his heart. At the time when Jesus was about to go to the cross and lay down his life for us—at the time when Jesus was about to carry His cross to Calvary, so that we might have redemption in Him—his three closest friends were sleeping instead of watching and praying for him.

Our brothers and sisters in restricted nations are carrying the cross for Jesus. Many times in their heartfelt pleas, they ask, “Please remember us in prayer, please do not forget us. Pray we will endure the afflictions and persecutions. Please pray that we will never deny our Lord Jesus Christ in the midst of our persecutions.”

These brothers and sisters don’t even ask for an hour of prayer. They would be so encouraged if we’d give only 5 minutes of our time to remember them.  Yet are we hearing their pleas, or is the church like the disciples, found sleeping?

My brothers and sisters, this is our family. We cannot let this part of the body go gangrene. We need to pray for life in their walk with Christ. We need to pray for our persecuted brethren and pray often.

As I reflect on these verses, I see another benefit of praying for the persecuted church. Jesus told His disciples to watch and pray that they will not enter into temptation. What does it say to us as we pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters.  Is it possible that as we focus on praying for them, we ourselves are saved from temptation?

If we’re truly interceding for the persecuted church, then as the old writers would say, our minds are kept from folly.  To put it in more modern language, our minds would be kept from the foolishness of sin, as we focus on the sufferings our brothers and sisters endure for Christ in persecuted lands.

1st Peter 4:1 tells us, he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin. I would also say that he who prays for the persecuted Church will deter himself from temptation. It is hard for me to think about the temptations of sin when I’m praying for them.

Let us not be slumbering, but let us watch and pray for our suffering brethren around the world.  Let us pray for those who are carrying the cross for Jesus. May the persecuted not ask, indeed let Jesus not ask us, “Could you not keep watch with us for 5 minutes?”

Nearly ten years ago, Blaine Scogin, the Founder of Persecution Watch and our dear brother in Christ, wrote this call to prayer for the Persecuted Church. He titled it, “To Pray or to Sleep”. Please join us on the call, tonight, to intercede with us for our persecuted brothers and sisters.

Again, we want to lift-up these persecuted witnesses to the Lord:
