IDOP 2023 PRAYER CONFERENCE CALL EVENT
(Voice of the Persecuted) For more than two decades, the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) has organized the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP), as a global event that unites millions of Christians in prayer for the persecuted Church.
In 1997, at the WEA Global Assembly in Vancouver, Brother Andrew of Open Doors was the first recipient of the World Evangelical Alliance’s Religious Liberty Award, recognizing his lifetime of service to the persecuted. In receiving the award, Brother Andrew stated that “only through mobilizing the church to pray for those who are persecuted for their faith in Christ, will we see a significant shift in the involvement in their plight.”
Annually, the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP) is observed on either the first or second Sunday of November, depending on your convenience and choice. This year, our Prayer Warrior Team will host a 12-hour prayer event on Sunday, November 12th from 9am-9pm EST (USA time zone) on the Persecution Watch Prayer Conference Call. Please join us to hear from our special guest speakers and pray for our suffering brothers and sisters during this event.
Over the 30 years of the Open Doors World Watch List reporting, the global phenomenon of Christian persecution has grown alarmingly.
- Globally, more than 360 million Christians suffer at least “high” levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith.
- In 1993, Christians faced high to extreme levels of persecution in 40 countries. This number has nearly doubled to 76 countries in 2023.
- In the top 50 alone, 312 million Christians now face very high or extreme levels of persecution.
- Worldwide, 1 in 7 Christians now experience at least “high” levels of persecution or discrimination; with 1 in 5 in Africa, 2 out of 5 in Asia, and 1 in 15 in Latin America.
Persecution takes many forms and often looks different in various contexts throughout the world. Believers might be separated from their families or ostracized by their communities. They may face discrimination in the workplace or education system. They could lose jobs or become the targets of extremists. They might have to flee their homes, or even face imprisonment, torture, or death.
The Bible tells us that we should pray for those who are mistreated as if we ourselves are mistreated (Heb. 13:3) and that if one member of the body suffers, we all suffer (1 Cor. 12:26). Let us remember the Lord’s call to pray for the persecuted united on this call.

Elderly Couple Left Homeless for Converting to Christianity (Uganda)

(Morning Star News) – An elderly couple in eastern Uganda has fled their village after Muslim relatives upset with their conversion to Christianity threatened to destroy them and their home, sources said.
In Wakalende village, Kyebando Ward in Mayuge town, 70-year-old Sula Mugudi and his wife, Aisha Mugudi, 62, put their faith in Christ on Sept. 16 during a church’s weeklong evangelistic campaign of home visits.
Three days after converting, the couple attended a church all-night prayer vigil, returning home on Sept. 20 to find that relatives who had learned of their conversion had bashed bricks from their modest home.
“As we returned back to our grass-thatched roof house, we found some of the debris around the house,” Sula Mugudi told Morning Star News. “On entering the house, we found there was a threatening message, ‘Today if we find you around, we shall destroy you with the house. You have become an embarrassment to our Muslim family by joining a wrong religion.’”
The fearful couple left the house immediately.
“It was a very difficult moment for us – no place to stay, no clothing and beddings,” Mugudi said.
A pastor whose name is withheld for security reasons said the couple has been relocated as far away as possible to avoid attack by the Muslim relatives.
“When the couple arrived at our church, they looked shaken and fearful,” he said. “The church has hidden them for the sake of the church as well for the lives of these two new Christians. We need prayers for God’s protection and providence.”
The attack was the latest of many instances of persecution of Christians in Uganda that Morning Star News has documented.
Uganda’s constitution and other laws provide for religious freedom, including the right to propagate one’s faith and convert from one faith to another. Muslims make up no more than 12 percent of Uganda’s population, with high concentrations in eastern areas of the country.

- Pastor Wang Yi to be released from prison, for his family and for the church.
- Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani from Iran, as he and his family are adjusting from his release from prison, that they may know what God’s will is for them now. Pray for the trauma they had to endure. UPDATE: According to Article 18, once sentenced to death for his “apostasy” has been “pardoned” and released after nearly five years in Tehran’s Evin Prison, but told Nadarkhani that he still faces flogging (30 lashes) and two years’ exile 2,000km from his home. SUMMARY
It was the worst day in Jewish history since the Holocaust. On October 7, 2023, several hundred Hamas terrorists coordinated a horrific attack, breaching the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel. They brutally slaughtered over 1,400 Israelis — mostly civilians. Another 200-plus civilians were taken by Hamas as hostages, including babies and young children. This act of brutality and mass kidnapping by the terror organization has set off a bloody conflict between Israel and Hamas. Yet, because Hamas has intentionally woven itself into Gaza’s civilian infrastructure, Palestinian civilians find themselves in the crosshairs of war. Thousands of Palestinian lives have been lost and thousands more injured in the process of Israel defending itself. One thing is certain: The Holy Land will never be the same.
Hamas was previously a Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood in the 1980s seeking the destruction of Israel. The terror group took power in the Gaza Strip in 2006. Israel withdrew from Gaza towards the end of 2005. The Palestinian political authority in Gaza held a contested election the following year. Hamas gained the most seats, solidifying its grip on the region. Palestinians in Gaza have not had another election since.
In the years following Hamas control of Gaza, Palestinians suffered. Hamas consistently used funding to build rockets and tunnels rather than roads and infrastructure for the people. This kept Gaza dependent on Israel for basic necessities like water and electricity — resources that Israel limited in supply. Hamas has continued to use the region as a missile base. Meanwhile, the Israeli government has been accused of maintaining a two-tier judicial system and treating Palestinians as second-class citizens. Palestinians also take issue with the continued expansion of Israeli territories in the West Bank.
The one place with true unity in the Holy Land is within the Church. Jewish and Muslim background Christians, Arab and Israeli, national and expatriate all come together in joint worship of Jesus Christ. On the day of Hamas’s attack in Israel, Arab and Jewish pastors called one another and wept for their nations. Only 2.5% of the people in Gaza and the West Bank are Christians. In Israel, the percentage is even lower at 1.3%. Now, in wartime, the message of the Gospel is more urgent than ever. Lord Jesus, have mercy. May Israelis, Palestinians, and Hamas fighters know Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. (Prayercast)

Persecution Watch: Walk in Love
(Voice of the Persecuted) You are invited to join us on Saturday, October 28, 2023, in a prayer conference call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.
Ephesians 1,2 “Be imitators of God [Jesus] therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”
- The world is filled with so much hate. Pray Christians would be able to show the light of love to all men as Messiah did.
- Pray we would be able to pray for, forgive and have love for our enemies.
Ephesians 5:3 “But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.”
- Pray for sanctification in God’s people.
Ephesians 5:4 “Nor should there be any obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.”
- Life and death are in the power of the tongue. Pray Christians would seek the help of the Holy Spirit to know what to say, especially to unbelievers.
- Pray for a spirit of thanksgiving, especially in these times.
Ephesians 5:5 “For this you can be sure: no immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolator—had any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.”
- Pray that the spirit of greed by ungodly men would not prevent aid from getting to those being persecuted.
Ephesians 5:6 “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient.”
- Pray for truth, may people seek the truth.
Ephesians 5:14 “For it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said, ‘Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you’.”
- Pray the church that is asleep would wake up; would pray more and help build the Kingdom of God.
Ephesians 5:15,16 “Be careful then how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”
- Pray we, the church, would make the most of every opportunity and not miss what Adonai wants to do through us.
Ephesians 5:19 “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord.”
- Pray for a spirit of joy and praise, that Believers would be able to meet together to encourage one another.
- Pray only God’s plans will succeed and none of Satan’s.
Again, we want to lift-up these persecuted witnesses to the Lord:

Remember, Encourage, and Pray for the Persecuted

Hebrews 13:3 (ESV) “Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.”
The following are some of the prayer requests that have come to us from our Christian partners. Christ is the true hope for peace in Israel, they are ministering to those affected by all the recent violence in both areas.
As we live in a land where hatred and extremism continue to dominate, we realize that there is psychological and spiritual warfare involved. We also acknowledge that as followers of Jesus, we are called to pray that God employs our churches as active witnesses during this challenging time; through the power of His Holy Spirit – “A church kneeling is more powerful than an army standing!”
Satan is trying to take control and take as many souls with him, and our role as a church is to break all the plans and oppressions of Satan. Therefore, may we encourage you to look with us at what is happening in the spiritual realms and realize that if Jesus came back today, whom would He stand with? The answer is simple: Both people, All people! He lives and he is coming back!
Pray for peace in the region. Pray for the protection of believers on both sides. Pray for Arab believers and Jewish believers so that they find unity in Jesus rather than division. Pray for wisdom and discernment for the leaders, that they may make decisions that lead to lasting peace and alleviate suffering.”

“When I woke up this morning, I couldn’t fathom what was happening. This is unprecedented, unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in my entire life. We don’t always know how to pray, but we are grateful for the Holy Spirit who intercedes on our behalf. The Holy Spirit takes the agony in our hearts and presents it to our loving Father, who fully understands and empathizes with our struggles. Romans 8:26-27. He responds according to His will and our needs.
Secondly, when you encounter the Master, He fills your heart with His love for all humanity. You begin to see God’s image in the faces of every human being, as we are all created in His likeness.”
From Rami at the Bible Society in Jerusalem: “The situation is getting worse every day on both sides. Thousands of people including children have died on the Israeli and Palestinian sides. Thousands of people have been injured too and the hospitals are overcrowded. We pray for all those suffering on both sides of the war. We especially want to help the remnant Christian community in Gaza and support the believers in Jesus there.
Some of our Messianic friends and their congregations are also very fearful as rockets are fired every day. Many Believers find themselves running for bomb shelters daily and also trying to pray and worship the Lord while the air raid siren rings.
Ultimately, please pray for the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Pray for our Brothers and Sisters on both sides of the conflict.

Persecution Watch: Praying for Believers in Myanmar

Opening Prayer: Israel
- God’s Guidance for Israel: Pray for the government of Israel to seek God’s wisdom as they respond to the ongoing situation.
- Church Leaders: Pray for church leaders to offer hope and comfort from God’s Word to those paralyzed by fear.
- Salvation: Pray for the salvation of both the Jewish people and those who have perpetrated these events.
- Frontline Fighters and Families: Pray for the men and women fighting on the front lines and for their families back home.
- Spiritual Work: Ask the Lord to work in the hearts of many during this tumultuous time.
- Mercy and Wisdom: Pray for a swift end to the conflict and for wise decisions from leaders.
- Combat Misinformation: Pray that misinformation would not exacerbate the situation.
MYANMAR: Population: 35.8 million; Christians 2.2 million
The Buddhist-majority country has 4.4 million Christians, which is just eight per cent of the country’s population. The persecution of Christians in Myanmar continues to worsen since the military took control in February 2021. Fighting has increased across the country and the Christian minority is bearing the brunt of these attacks. Churches have been attacked and destroyed. More Christians than ever have become internally displaced people or refugees and are living in camps or churches without adequate food and healthcare.
The daily reality is that Christians do not enjoy the same rights and legal protection as the Buddhist majority. Christians are often victims of violent attacks conducted with impunity. Even in predominantly Christian states like Chin State and Kayah State, long-established churches have suffered attacks and Christian aid workers and pastors have been killed. Government forces attack Christian villages and churches, while Buddhist monasteries remain largely untouched.
About half a million Christians, that is 90 percent of the Chin State population is Christian. Security forces are destroying crosses, desecrating churches not allowing religious assemblies Forced labor, forced conscription, physical abuse and extorsion causes Chin people to flee. 110,000 refugees live in India and another 50,000 fled to Malaysia.
Converts to Christianity also face threats, ridicule and physical beatings from their Buddhist, Muslim or tribal families, and are shunned from community life. Communities that aim to stay ‘Buddhist only’ make life for Christian families impossible by barring their access to community water resources. Na Ta La schools aim to convert Christian children to Buddhism, which is an effective way of stopping Christianity from spreading to the next generation. The boys at these schools are raised to become Buddhist monks. [Na Ta La schools – 29 – are run by Buddhist monks. Forcing children to become Buddhist – heavy persecution]
Prayer Points
- Pray to the Lord that the ruling coup regime, the generals, will return power to elected officials and start respecting Christian minorities.
- Pray to the Lord to bring unity to the complicated political situation in the country involving powerful rebel groups.
- Pray to the Lord for unity between the Christian churches.
- Pray to the Lord to protect the illegal Bible schools in the Chin and Karen states.
- Pray to the Lord that indigenous church planters and indigenous missionaries will boldly proclaim the gospel.
- Pray to the Lord for the Christians who are oppressed and persecuted by Buddhists and tribal members practicing Animism (witch craft).
- Pray to the Lord to give strength to new believers who face difficulties from their families, villagers, government surveillance and Buddhist monks.
- Pray to the Lord for NGOs to provide more survival training as well as trauma counseling.
- Pray to the Lord that the Christians who have been forced out of their homes and living in camps to get adequate food, water, and healthcare.
- Praise and thank God that the church in Myanmar continues to stand strong.

Urgent Prayer Call for Gaza and Israel
