Persecution Watch: Praying for Believers in Kuwait and Qatar

Kuwait: Population: 4.3 million, Christian 513,000 thousand (12%)
In Kuwait, expatriate Christians are relatively free to worship informally. However, the existing places registered for worship are very small for the number of people gathering, and this can lead to tension between different Christian groups. In addition, it is extremely difficult to obtain a property for worship gatherings.
Local converts from Islam face the most extreme persecution, as they face pressure from both family members and the local community to recant their Christian faith. These believers risk discrimination, harassment, monitoring of their activities by the police, and even intimidation by vigilante groups. Moreover, conversion from Islam to another faith is not officially recognized and is likely to lead to legal problems in personal status and property matters.
Expatriate Muslims converting to Christianity experience similar pressures as in their home countries, as they are often living within their own national or ethnic communities. Despite this, there are rarely reports of Christians being killed, imprisoned or harmed for their faith.
Who is most vulnerable to persecution? Kuwait is a very small country with the capital city (Kuwait City) being the center of all activities. The risks that Christians face—especially converts from Islam to Christianity—depend on the sort of community Christians are part of, rather than the geographical area where they live. Kuwaiti converts face the highest risks as Kuwaitis are conservative and family ties are strong. Western Christian expatriates are most often free to practice their beliefs, as long as they refrain from proselytizing. Non-Western Christians with lower levels of skills are more likely to face discrimination and abuse, especially female domestic workers. Many of these are from the Philippines. .
• Pray for the government of Kuwait to provide more freedom for Christians—especially Christians from a Muslim background—to meet, pray and share their faith freely.
• Ask God to give Kuwaiti Christians boldness and perseverance to stand strong in face of being interrogated by the authorities. That they can face severe threats if they continue to practice their faith and meet with other believers.
• Pray for the many expatriate Christians who work and live in Kuwait. Ask God to give these believers fellowship, vocations and renewed hope.
• Pray for Kuwaitis that are exposed to Christianity through business, travel studying abroad to respond to the Gospel message.
• Pray for a wide distribution of Christian materials through media such as internet, radio broadcasts as well as Christian literature.
• Pray To the Lord that He will have His hand of protection on the believers who boldly share the Gospel despite the hostile environment.
Qatar
Life for Christians in Qatar can look very different depending on what type of Christian you are. There are two general categories: Christian foreigners, most of whom are migrant workers, and Christians who have converted from Islam. Foreign workers who are Christians are much freer to worship. For instance, the government has allowed large worship events in the past. Even for these followers of Jesus, however, any evangelism to Muslims is strictly forbidden and can lead to deportation.
Additionally, many migrant workers (of any faith) are mistreated and abused—Christian migrant workers may be doubly targeted for this type of abuse because of their job and their faith. And even though the government provides land for migrant Christians to build churches, churches are often monitored and kept to specific areas.
Muslims who convert to Christianity face much more significant persecution. Converts from both indigenous and migrant backgrounds bear the brunt of persecution.
Local Qatari converts face very high pressure from their Muslim families. Converts from a migrant background are primarily controlled by the social environment they live in. Often, the social norms of their home countries apply to them rather than Qatari cultural norms. In some cases, they can avoid pressure by living within an international community, rather than their own ethnic community. Nonetheless, even their employers can be a source of persecution
Open violence against Christians is very rare in Qatar. There are hardly ever reports of Christians being killed, imprisoned or harmed for their faith, because the number of converts is low and they keep their faith secret. Violence against Christians in Qatar fell a bit—though it is usually low—but pressure from community, family, society and other non-violent sources actually increased. National life was the main place in daily life the pressure increased, and drove the main slight rise in score. It is still incredibly hard for Christians—particularly Muslim converts—to live out their faith in Qatar.
Qatar has a massive population of migrant workers—a recent estimate indicates only 12 percent of the population are indigenous Qataris—so many workers come from a variety of faith backgrounds. Nonetheless, there is significant pressure if they follow Jesus instead of Islam. That pressure can come from their own migrant communities, or from the broader Qatari society. Converts who are able to find a livelihood and home in an international community often experience less persecution, but they can still be targeted.
Indigenous Qataris who convert to Christianity face significant repercussions from family and community, especially since Qatari society embraces a conservative strain of Islam.
• Pray God works powerfully in Qatar and give Christians safe places to meet together, rent facilities to worship.
• Pray migrant workers are protected from the abuse and discrimination of their employers and not additionally targeted for their faith in Jesus.
• Pray for secret Christians in Qatar who have accepted Jesus but cannot be open about their new faith. Pray their family and community would allow them to worship freely, and the surrounding society would embrace an openness to other faiths besides Islam.
• Pray to the Lord to protect His believers who ignore the anti proselytism laws to reach out to the lost.
• Pray that Qatar Arabs will be influenced towards Christianity by gospel radio, Arab Christian internet websites.
• Pray that Christians will love and forgive their persecutors.

- Leah Sharibu, prisoner of Boko Haram since 2018. Pray for her release.
- Alice Loksha Ngaddah, kidnapped February 2019. She is a mother of two, working as a nurse for UNICEF. Pray for her release.
- Pray for Pastor Wang Yi to be released from prison.
- Pray for Anita, a Christian convert facing a long prison term who escaped from Iran and praying to go to a country where she can express her faith openly.
- For the release of Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani from Iran, and his family as their Persecution continues. Pastor Nadarkhani is serving the second year of his six-year sentence.

Leah Sharibu and Alice that they will be set free from Boko Haram captivity.
- Leah Sharibu was kidnapped along with 109 other students on February 19, 2018 when Boko Haram attacked a boarding school in the city of Dapchi, Maiduguri Diocese, in north-eastern Nigeria. A month later, some of the girls died in captivity and all the others were released, except Leah. She was the only Christian in the group
- Alice Loksha Ngaddah was kidnapped during the Rann attack on March 1, 2018. She was a nurse working with Unicef and is a mother of two.
- Pastor Wang Yi to be released from prison, for his family, the children, and the church in China. Pastor Wang Yi who is currently serving his prison sentence.
- Anita, an Iranian Christian, persecuted by the Islamic regime and seeking asylum.
- Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani from Iran, for his release and his family as their persecution continues. At present he is serving his six-year sentence.

Persecution Watch: Praying for Believers in Algeria
(Voice of the Persecuted) You are invited to join us on Thursday, July 22, 2021 in a prayer call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.
Algeria: Population 43.3 million, Christians 129,000 [0.3%]
Before the founding of Islam in the seventh century and the subsequent invasion of Arab Muslims, Algeria was inhabited by the Berber people. Today, they live mainly in Algeria’s mountainous Kabylie area in the north, while Arabs inhabit the rest of the country. The Christian faith has a long history in North Africa, especially among ethnic Berbers. The early church father Augustine of Hippo is thought to have been a Berber from Algeria. After centuries of oppressive Muslim occupation, public Christian worship and witness have largely disappeared, but many Berbers are now rediscovering their Christian heritage. Churches have seen rapid growth, and Algeria has experienced one of the world’s largest movements of Muslims coming to faith in Christ. Algerian Christians are reaching out boldly to their Muslim countrymen, causing increased persecution in an uncertain political climate
Christian converts from Islam are persecuted by the government and their own family members. They also face a variety of hardships from the local community. Algeria is a shining example of church growth in North Africa and is also a leader for theological training and church development in the region. Nearly all of the church growth has occurred within the Berber community. Although churches are allowed to meet openly, in 2018 the government temporarily closed many church buildings and harassed congregations. Berber Christians, who are watched carefully, have gained a collective voice through an Evangelical association of churches. Sharing the gospel with Arabs can cause serious problems, but Berber Christians continue to share the gospel boldly in and around al-Qaida terrorist camps. Secret communities of Arab Christians exist throughout the country. While it is not common for Christians to be imprisoned, one believer was imprisoned for nearly a year in connection with a social media post. He received a presidential pardon in July 2017.
Pressure is also exerted by state officials receptive to the teachings of radical Islamic teachers. They use their influence to limit the freedoms of converts, including preventing them from expressing their views in public. Laws regulating non-Muslim worship prohibit anything that would “shake the faith of a Muslim” or be used as “a means of seduction intending to convert a Muslim to another religion.”
There is a Bible Society in Algeria, but the printing and importation of Bibles is carefully monitored, limited, and controlled by the government. Bible distributions are risky for the distributors and congregations involved, and Bibles are often confiscated by government officials.
NGOs relocates believers who are expelled from their homes. They print and distribute Bibles and literature and support front-line workers who reach out to Muslims. In cooperation with local partners and churches NGOs also train and provide advocacy and prayer support.
- Pray to the Lord that the Government will stop their persecution of the Protestant Church of Algeria [EPA]
- Pray that the laws regulating non-Muslim worship will be abolished.
- Pray that the Lord will make government and local leaders immune to the teachings of radical Muslims.
- Pray to the Lord that Christians will establish strategic relationships with local leaders and influence them to respect Christianity.
- Pray that all recently closed churches will reopen.
- Pray for the establishment of strategic relationships between Christians and local leaders of influence, which will inspire greater respect among communities towards Christianity.
- Request that converts who have counted the cost for Jesus will have access to a community of Christians to support and build them up.
- Pray for unity among Algerian church leaders.
- Pray for opportunities to distribute Bibles throughout Algeria, especially in the south.
- Pray for Christians whose churches were closed by the government. Pray for the protection and safety for the worshippers.
- Pray for those who hear the gospel through social media evangelism.
- Pray to give the persecuted the ability to pray for and forgive their persecutors.
- Pray for the gospel’s spread into majority Arab regions of Algeria.
- Pray to give the persecuted the ability to pray for and forgive their persecutors.
- Pray to the Lord that will grow His church in spite of the hostile environment, that there will be a spectacular increase in the number of Christians and that the forces of darkness will be unable to hinder the addition of new believers.

- Leah Sharibu was kidnapped along with 109 other students on February 19, 2018 when Boko Haram attacked a boarding school in the city of Dapchi, Maiduguri Diocese, in north-eastern Nigeria. A month later, some of the girls died in captivity and all the others were released, except Leah. She was the only Christian in the group
- Alice Loksha Ngaddah was kidnapped during the Rann attack on March 1, 2018. She was a nurse working with Unicef and is a mother of two.
- Pastor Wang Yi to be released from prison, for his family, the children, and the church in China. Pastor Wang Yi who is currently serving his prison sentence.
- Anita, an Iranian Christian, persecuted by the Islamic regime and seeking asylum.
- Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani from Iran, for his release and his family as their persecution continues. At present he is serving his six-year sentence.

Persecution Watch: Praying for Believers in Turkmenistan
(Voice of the Persecuted) You are invited to join us on Thursday, July 15, 2021 in a prayer call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.
TURKMENISTAN: Population 6 million, Christians 68,000 [1.1%]
Persecution against Christians in this repressive state comes largely from the government and from society. The government imposes many restrictions on church life. Unless their churches are registered, Christians are highly susceptible to police raids, threats, arrests and fines. Even Russian Orthodox and Armenian Apostolic churches may have their Sunday services monitored. The printing or importing of Christian materials is also restricted. Believers who come from Muslim backgrounds experience intense pressure from families, friends, and villagers to deny their faith.
Despite dropping a place from last year’s position on the World Watch List, little has changed for Christians in Turkmenistan. It remains hugely challenging for those who follow Jesus, notably due to restrictions and surveillance from the state, and pressure on converts to recant. Whilst government oppression is prevalent across the country, believers from Muslim backgrounds experience greater pressure in rural areas.
Open Doors strengthens the persecuted church by providing Christian literature, biblical and vocational training, and socio-economic development projects. We also provide immediate aid to believers when they are jailed, excluded from families and communities, and deprived of livelihood and employment because of their faith in Christ.
Prayer Points
- Pray that the Holy Spirit will free President Kurbanguly from his fear and paranoia of Christianity.
- Pray for an easing of heavy restrictions on churches in Turkmenistan.
- Pray that the Lord will protect the churches that are growing through evangelism from government interference.
- Pray that God will encourage and protect pastors and elders in ministering to the saints.
- Pray that believers will be courageous and bold in giving the Good News to the unsaved.
- Pray for Uzbekistan believers who have left Islam to follow Jesus, as they face rejection and attacks from neighbors and even from own family members.
- Pray to the Lord for His hand of protection on Christians to be able to live in peace in their communities.
- Pray that the internet will have great messages that ill encourage believers and also draw in unbelievers.
- Pray to the Lord that believers are not feeling that they are all alone, that they get to that they are being prayed for.
- Pray that the Lord will blind the customs officers and other officials so that the Word and Christian material will come into Turkmenistan unhindered and abundantly.
- Pray for the safety of NGO workers as they help the persecuted in a hostile environment
- Pray that the Lord will multiply and guard His believers, that the forces of darkness will be defeated.

Dear Prayer Warriors, we have received an urgent prayer request to pray for the people of Myanmar, their struggles, sufferings, and tribulations. Covid 19 has taken the lives of many, 60 ministers have died from this disease in Chin State. They are desperate for oxygen for people who are sick with the virus. Many have been unjustly dragged to prison and may not see their families again.
We will also remember these dear ones:
