Persecution Watch: Praying for Believers in Myanmar
(Voice of the Persecuted) You’re invited to join us on Thursday, May 25, 2023, in a prayer conference call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.
Myanmar: Population: 55.2 million, Christians 4.4 million
The situation in Christian areas has taken a turn for the worse since the military took control in February 2021. Fighting has increased across the country and the Christian minority is bearing the brunt of these attacks. More Christians than ever have become internally displaced people or refugees and are living in camps or churches without adequate food and healthcare.
The daily reality is that Christians do not enjoy the same rights and legal protection as the Buddhist majority. Christians are often victims of violent attacks conducted with impunity. Even in predominantly Christian states like Chin State and Kayah State, long-established churches have suffered attacks and Christian aid workers and pastors have been killed. Government forces attack Christian villages and churches, while Buddhist monasteries remain largely untouched.
Converts to Christianity also face persecution from their Buddhist, Muslim or tribal families and are shunned from community life. Communities that aim to stay ‘Buddhist only’ make life for Christian families impossible by barring their access to community water resources. Non-traditional church groups experience opposition too, especially those located in rural areas and those who are known for proselytizing.
The ongoing civil war between Myanmar’s ethnic armed groups and the military is disproportionately affecting Christian communities in majority Christian states such as Chin, Kachin, Karen, and Kayah states. In Kachin State and Northern Shan State, where fighting is escalating, Christians are being killed, detained, and forced to flee.
Converts from a Buddhist, Muslim or tribal background face the strongest pressure to renounce their faith, especially from their family and community. The small number of Christian converts from a Muslim background who live among the Rohingya Muslim community are especially vulnerable, and face persecution both because of their ethnic affiliation, and because their Muslim families and communities put them under enormous pressure to return to Islam.
2022 brought the country further than ever from a solution to the violent conflict which started when the army staged a coup on 1 February 2021. Fighting has continued and, in some parts of the country, increased and the Christian minority is among those bearing the brunt of attacks. Christians have been killed and churches attacked and destroyed. The government has much work to do to become more inclusive of ethnic and religious minorities, including Christians.
- Pray that God will touch and soften the hearts of the Military Leaders and out peace and reconciliation on their minds.
- Pray for reconciliation between religious groups in Myanmar and an end to the habitual discrimination against Christians.
- Pray for the protection of the thousands of vulnerable people who are now refugees or internally displaced due to the ongoing conflict.
- Thank God for the success of the persecution survival training which has brought hope, encouragement, and resilience to Christians. Pray for survival training to continue.
- Pray to the Lord to protect believers and churches targeted by the military.
- Pray to the Lord that He will encourage church leaders who struggle with the horrific memories of the violence and cruelty they had witnessed.
- Pray for the Christians who converted from Buddhism and Islam, ask the Lord that they will be protected from violence and oppression.
- Pray that God will strengthen each believer and revive their spirits that have been daunted by Myanmar’s turmoil.
- Pray for the believers, in a very hostile climate, reach out to bring the Good News to the lost.
- Pray that believers sense God’s presence and know that we are praying for them.
- Pray for the beliers to be able to love and forgive their persecutors.
- Pray for the NGOs, who working through local partners, strengthens persecuted believers in Myanmar through literature distribution, discipleship programs, livelihood support and various forms of training.
- Pray that persecution and violence will not stymie the growth of Christianity in Myanmar. That the forces of darkness will not prevail and that the Lord will greatly increase the numbers of believers.

- Leah Sharibu, a prisoner of Boko Haram since 2018. Pray for her release.
- Alice Loksha Ngaddah, kidnapped February 2019. She is a mother of two, working as a nurse for UNICEF. Pray for her release.
- Pray for Pastor Wang Yi to be released from prison
- For Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani from Iran, as he and his family are adjusting from his release from prison, that they may know what God’s will is for them now. Pray for the trauma they had to endure. UPDATE: According to Article 18, once sentenced to death for his “apostasy” has been “pardoned” and released after nearly five years in Tehran’s Evin Prison, but told Nadarkhani that he still faces flogging (30 lashes) and two years’ exile 2,000km from his home. - UPDATE (March 17, 2023): Ryan Koher, a pilot for the U.S.-based ministry Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF), and two of the ministry’s South African volunteers were released from a Mozambican prison Tuesday afternoon, the organization announced. The trio had been held at a high-security prison inside the southeastern African country for four months. Their release is a provisional one and they are required to remain in the country, while their case is still ongoing, according to MAF. Koher is said to be “doing well” following his release and has spoken multiple times with his wife, Annabel, and his two sons since his release, the ministry said. Source

Persecution Watch: Praying for Believers in Syria
(Voice of the Persecuted) You’re invited to join us on Thursday, May 18, 2023, in a prayer conference call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.
Syria: Population: 19.5 million, Christians – 638 thousand
Syrian Christians’ lives have been severely disrupted by the civil war that began more than two decades ago. Caught in the crossfire in this brutal conflict between Muslim factions, believers have been abused and attacked from all sides. More than 750,000 Christians have been driven from the country. The churches and believers that have been able to remain in Syria have served as a beacon of hope and a source of peace for both Christians and Muslims throughout the war. Many Muslims have come to Christ as Christians have reached out with acts of compassion and practical assistance. And reports that neighboring countries may send Syrian refugees back to Syria gives believers hope that those who came to faith in nearby countries will return and strengthen local churches.
90 percent of Syrians are Sunni Muslims. Syrian Christians make up a significant minority, but many have taken refuge in neighboring countries because of the war.
Islamist groups seek to drive Christians out of Syria, and the government works to control churches. While Muslim communities can be hostile to Christians, severe persecution usually comes from the government and Islamist groups, which have been unchecked in their oppression and abuse of Christians during the ongoing civil war.
“A 15-year-old boy told me he only had one wish: to take life back to how it was before the war. After 12 years of war, Covid, sanctions, and the collapse of the currency, this latest disaster is more than many people can bear,” he said. “They use many different expressions to express the 12-year war. But if you ask them about the earthquake that they were exposed to, the answer is just one word: horror.”
Prayer Points
- Pray to the Lord that He will touch the heart of the president Bashar al-Assad to recognize the Christian citizens of Syria.
- Pray to the Lord that the civil war will finally end and free the country from the influence of Iran and Russia.
- Pray to the Lord that the government will reign in and control the radical Muslim groups like ISIS.
- Pray for internally displaced Christians in Aleppo and the northwest region to be able to return home.
- Pray to the Lord to protect and encourage the few Christians living in the Kurdish Qamishli area.
- Pray for Pastors and believers who are faithfully sharing Christ amid great turmoil.
- Pray that the many Christian converts from Islam will grow in knowledge and faith.
- Pray for unity among churches and Christians.
- Pray that the Lord will strengthen pastors and church staff, who are exhausted by war and unrest.
- Pray for Christians who commonly suffer the loss of jobs, homes, social standing and family relationships.
- Pray that believers have easy access to the internet online bibles and that messages will give them strength and comfort.
- Pray to the Lord that He will appear to many Muslims in their sleep and that they will become seekers to find out more – to be connected to believers and answer the ongoing needs from the recent earthquakes.
- Pray to the Lord to protect the NGOs networks to help believers and provide.
- Pray for Christians to be deeply anchored in faith and that they know that we pray for them.
- Pray to the Lord to help Churches who are struggling to meet the needs of the overwhelming number of displaced people.
- Pray to the Lord that, despite the hostile climate in Syria, His church will continue to grow and be the light in the darkness.

Their release is a provisional one and they are required to remain in the country, while their case is still ongoing, according to MAF. “Thanks for the ministry you provide to Christians living in countries who are persecuted for being Christians. I need your letters to remind me to pray for those who are persecuted for their faith. I feel ashamed when in America, I can be ridiculed for my faith, yet they can be killed. It also strengthens me when I hear of their fate and those who will not deny Christ.

What is Persecution Watch?
Persecution Watch is a U.S. national prayer conference call ministry that prays specifically for the global Persecuted Church. For over a decade, Blaine Scogin led this national network of believers who faithfully pray for the persecuted and the global harvest for the Kingdom of God. The group meets via a free call-in service every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday night at 9pm Eastern time in the United States (please check your time zone). Blaine also served as Prayer Director for Voice of the Persecuted, and both missions became one. Brother Blaine passed into glory on December 26, 2019. It was truly a blessing for all of us to serve alongside this dear man of God and he will be greatly missed. The prayer mission of Persecution Watch remains an important part of our mission. Voice of the Persecuted is committed to continue the prayer conference call for the persecuted along with the dedicated Persecution Watch prayer warrior team.
Prior to the passing of Brother Blaine, he confirmed the passing of the torch as prayer conference call leader to Nadia Dybvik. Nadia has a burdened heart for the persecuted and is a prayer warrior standing in the gap for them. She joined the Persecution Watch prayer team in 2013 and has been part of the core ever since. Before becoming the prayer call leader, she served in the role of prayer moderator since 2015. Blaine chose Nadia for her faithfulness to pray for the persecuted and her strong commitment to the Persecution Watch mission. We are blessed not only with her gift of prayer, but her genuine love for every brother and sister in Christ that comes on the call to pray. May the Lord continue to bless Nadia and the prayer team in the mission and their personal lives.

Why Are So Many Currently Praying for Israel?
(Voice of the Persecuted) You’re invited to join us on Saturday, May 13, 2023, in a prayer conference call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.
Dear Prayer Warriors, we want to lift Israel in prayer during this time between Passover and Shavuot. Many Christians have been prompted to pray and some to fast during these days. We know the important thing is for all the people to have a loving relationship with the living God; to know Messiah Yeshua as Savior, and Adonai. And, thanksgiving that all Israel will be saved, as per Romans 11:26,27
There are pages of prayers from Isaiah 62, with one scripture for each of the days from May 7, the 31st day of counting the Omer, to Shavuot, the 50th day. I am choosing and paraphrasing some of them.
Isaiah 62:1 “For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain quiet, till her righteousness shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch.
- Pray for salvation for all Israel.
- Help Your people to declare Your Holy Name among the people and Nations.
- Pray for a spirit of repentance for both believers and unbelievers.
- Pray Israel would truly be a righteous Nation.
Isaiah 62:2a “The Nations will see your righteousness and all kings your glory”
- Pray leaders of other Nations would see God’s hand upon Israel and God’s glory in the land.
Isaiah 62:2b “You will be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will bestow”
- Pray for a breaking of the power of derogatory names for Israel and the Jewish people; change the hearts of those who do so and heal the wounds of those hurt by them.
Isaiah 62:3 “You will be a crown of splendor in the LORD’s hand, a royal diadem in the hand of your God. No longer will they call you Deserted or your land Desolate.”
- Pray governing authorities in Israel to align with the decrees of God’s Word. Give them the fear of the LORD so they may govern with much wisdom, understanding and knowledge that comes with it.
- Raise up leaders in Zion who seek God’s royal leadership and give them favor.
Isaiah 62:4 “No longer will they call you Deserted, or name your land Desolate, but you will be called Hephzibah and your land Beulah”
- This is the LORD’s land which belongs to Him. It is not to be bought or sold OR given away. Pray for repentance for doing just that. Pray for its leaders to be zealous for the land.
- Pray protection for its borders, inside and out. Protect the land and its people from death and destruction by enemy attacks. Find out all terrorist plots and squash them.
Isaiah 62:5 For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.”
- Pray against the spirit of antisemitism, including all replacement theology and cursing Israel. Deliver the church from it.
- Pray for Intercessors with the opposite spirit of replacement theology to heal both the church and those hurt and embittered by it.
- Pray for a release of all the land Yah desires Israel to have, now and in the future, especially Judea, Samaria, and Gaza.
- Pray for justice to prevail for all who live in the land, whether Jew or Arab or any other people.
- Pray for rain to water the dry and thirsty ground; make more of the desert bloom, even naturally, as well as the wonder working technologies You have given to them. May it be for God’s glory.
- Pray for revival during this time.

Persecution Watch: Praying for Believers in Mozambique
(Voice of the Persecuted) You are invited to join us on Thursday, May 11, 2023, in a prayer conference call for the persecuted church hosted by Persecution Watch.
Mozambique: Population 32.3 million, Christians: 17.4 (54%)
Attacks from Islamic extremists and the presence of drug cartels in some areas have all contributed to increasing persecution in Mozambique. Christians face extreme violence in the northern part of the country. Christians have been forced to flee their homes. Islamic extremists have looted and destroyed many Christian places of worship, Christian schools and businesses owned by Christians. Christian aid workers were also targeted. Because of this, it is difficult for Christians to gather—either inside or outside of churches—and it can be risky for believers to speak against persecution.
In the northern part of the country where Muslims are the majority, converts face extreme pressure to renounce their faith. If they refuse, they will usually be shunned. In April last year, a jihadist group with possible ties to Islamic State killed 52 people, burned down churches and institutions and attacked villages.
Churches in Africa have seen members beheaded, buildings reduced to ashes, and tens of thousands displaced. This terror is due to Islamic extremists, some reports say 15 people were beheaded in a single week by militants. 52 young people were killed during this year’s Holy Week after refusing to join the Islamic group.
Prayer Points
- Pray for the Government, President Filipe Byusi to take decisive action to uproot and remove radical Muslims.
- Pray for more protection and that the current strain of Islamic extremists will be squelched before they grow and expand, potentially causing greater violence and persecution across the nation.
- Pray for Christians who lost loved ones and survived the jihadist attacks in Mozambique’s northern region. Ask God to give them comfort, peace and the power to forgive their persecutors.
- Pray for NGO’s as they work to provide more than relief aid to their traumatized community members and fellow believers with trauma counseling and pastoral training.
- Pray that the Lord will confuse and discourage Muslim kidnappers. Pray that the Lord will keep adolescent girls and boys safe from the sex trade.
- Pray for wisdom and discernment for pastors and church leaders, as they shepherd their people and train them to be prepared for any potential persecution—so they will be ready to stand strong.
- Pray that the many Christian converts from Islam are protected will grow in knowledge and faith. That they find it easy to fellowship with other believers.
- Ask God to give believers many opportunities to share the gospel. Pray for open doors and divine appointments.
- Pray that the Internet has powerful messages that resonate and convict Muslims as well as communications that guide and edify Christians.
- Pray to the Lord for the rebuilding of churches that were destroyed by Muslim extremists.
- Pray that they get to know that we are praying for them and that they will experience God’s comfort.
- Pray for the Lord to strengthen the Church in Mozambique and to give the Church unity in the face of Islamic extremist threats. Ask God to give them the courage to keep meeting and keep growing in their faith.
- Mozambique is one of the poorest nations on Earth – decades of Marxism, then civil war, long-term drought, and crippling debt. Pray that believers find ways to support themselves.
- Legal freedom of religion is new. Pray for God’s protection on liberty!
- According to Operation World, 80% of pastors/church leaders have little training, and many are functionally illiterate. Pray for more leadership training in the Body of Christ.
Praise Points:
- Mozambican Civil War (1977–1992) between Marxists and all others finally ended.
- Christian churches grew tremendously after the war. The number of believers tripled from 1985 to 2010.

- For Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani from Iran, as he and his family are adjusting from his release from prison, that they may know what God’s will is for them now. Pray for the trauma they had to endure. UPDATE: According to Article 18, once sentenced to death for his “apostasy” has been “pardoned” and released after nearly five years in Tehran’s Evin Prison, but told Nadarkhani that he still faces flogging (30 lashes) and two years’ exile 2,000km from his home. - UPDATE (March 17, 2023): Ryan Koher, a pilot for the U.S.-based ministry Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF), and two of the ministry’s South African volunteers were released from a Mozambican prison Tuesday afternoon, the organization announced. The trio had been held at a high-security prison inside the southeastern African country for four months. Their release is a provisional one and they are required to remain in the country, while their case is still ongoing, according to MAF. Koher is said to be “doing well” following his release and has spoken multiple times with his wife, Annabel, and his two sons since his release, the ministry said. Source

What is Persecution Watch?
Persecution Watch is a U.S. national prayer conference call ministry that prays specifically for the global Persecuted Church. For over a decade, Blaine Scogin led this national network of believers who faithfully pray for the persecuted and the global harvest for the Kingdom of God. The group meets via a free call-in service every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday night at 9pm Eastern time in the United States (please check your time zone). Blaine also served as Prayer Director for Voice of the Persecuted, and both missions became one. Brother Blaine passed into glory on December 26, 2019. It was truly a blessing for all of us to serve alongside this dear man of God and he will be greatly missed. The prayer mission of Persecution Watch remains an important part of our mission. Voice of the Persecuted is committed to continue the prayer conference call for the persecuted along with the dedicated Persecution Watch prayer warrior team.
Prior to the passing of Brother Blaine, he confirmed the passing of the torch as prayer conference call leader to Nadia Dybvik. Nadia has a burdened heart for the persecuted and is a prayer warrior standing in the gap for them. She joined the Persecution Watch prayer team in 2013 and has been part of the core ever since. Before becoming the prayer call leader, she served in the role of prayer moderator since 2015. Blaine chose Nadia for her faithfulness to pray for the persecuted and her strong commitment to the Persecution Watch mission. We are blessed not only with her gift of prayer, but her genuine love for every brother and sister in Christ that comes on the call to pray. May the Lord continue to bless Nadia and the prayer team in the mission and their personal lives.

Special Guests to share on Prayer Conference Call for Sudan

Mariam Ibraheem, a Christian who was imprisoned and given the death sentence by the Sudanese government for not renouncing her faith in Christ. Following an international outcry and the prayers of many, the Lord answered and led the way to her release. Mariam is now living in the U.S. and advocates for the persecuted church. Faith McDonnell is the KGI Global Advocacy Director, writes and speaks on the global Persecuted Church, & general human rights. She was part of the coalition to draft and pass the Sudan Peace Act 2002. She defends persecuted Christians and other persecuted believers in North Korea, throughout the Middle East, Nigeria, China, Pakistan, Sudan, and South Sudan, etc. She is very knowledgeable of what happens in Sudan. We are grateful to have her share and pray with us on this call.

Persecution Watch: Praying for Believers in Tanzania

I recently read a newsletter with a focus on Tanzania, a country I have not heard much about.
In the 2021 Report on International Religious Freedom, the U.S. government estimates the total population at 62.1 million (midyear 2021). A 2020 Pew Forum survey estimates approximately 63 percent of the population identifies as Christian, 34 percent as Muslim, and 5 percent practicing other religions.
Some of Temistocris’ story from the newsletter:
Temistocris was attacked viciously with a machete while asleep during an all-night prayer meeting. The Holy Spirit told him to pick up a stone, which he did. Temistocris threw the stone at the man and knocked him down.
While in the hospital, a stranger gave his wife some juice to give to him. Again, the Holy Spirit advised her not to. It was later discovered the juice was poisoned.
Both he and his pastor had similar dreams which were not interpreted correctly.
- Pray for dreams and visions to alert the church to danger and know what to do.

- Pray for believers to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit and hear voice clearly.
Temistocris has seen his attackers and has forgiven them.
- Pray all Christians would be able to forgive their persecutors.
As a thank offering, Temistocris gave his land to the church.
- Pray believers would have thankful hearts; not given to complaining.
Front line workers helped move the family to another town and start a poultry business. Temistocris was unable to work at his previous job as a stone mason. He later bought a plot of land from its profits and built a new church on the property.
- Pray for front line workers:
- Their protection.
- Provision for those who need their help and able to connect with them.
- Pray for boldness and courage in doing Kingdom work.
- Pray for ministries that help those who are persecuted.
Mathayo and Generosa: Generosa’s two sisters exhibited signs of demonic possession. They were delivered when a pastor prayed with them. They all became committed believers.
- Pray for these gifts to be manifest and many would place their faith in Messiah.
Mathayo was murdered, but Generosa and her family are committed to continuing the ministry.
- Pray for perseverance.
Pastor Charles was called to Zanzibar, an island in Tanzania and off the coast of the mainland. It is semi-autonomous and 99% Muslim. He shared,
They do not want any Christians at all. While preaching one evening, a Gunman entered the church. All left except the pastor who was standing at the pulpit. The gunman searched for him frantically but couldn’t see him.
- Pray that the Lord would do that many times all over the world; thank God for protecting whoever He wants.
Psalm 30:11 “You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy.”
- Pray Adonai would turn depressed and wounded hearts into joy.

Background of the National Day of Prayer
In 1775 the Continental Congress allocated a time for prayer in forming a new nation. Over the years, there have been calls for a day of prayer, including from President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. On April 17, 1952, President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming the National Day of Prayer into law in the United States. President Reagan amended the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May each year as the National Day of Prayer in the United States..
The National Prayer Committee was formed in the United States in 1972. It went on to create the National Day of Prayer Task Force, with the intended purpose of coordinating events for the National Day of Prayer. According to the Legal Information Institute, the President shall issue each year a proclamation designating the first Thursday in May as a National Day of Prayer on which the people of the United States may turn to God in prayer and meditation at churches, in groups, and as individuals.

What is Persecution Watch?
moved by the Holy Spirit to pray, we too must continue to serve those suffering persecution by lifting them up to the Lord through prayer.
On occasion, persecuted brothers and sisters have been invited on the conference call to share the trials they are facing. The team serves to encourage them by washing their feet in Spirit led prayer. Time is often reserved for those on the call to ask questions. We believe this helps to gain a better understanding of the situation that persecuted Christians endure in their specific nations. Q&A also helps us to focus our prayers based on their current needs.
Persecution Watch also hosts callers who want to pray united from other nations. If your heart is perplexed by the sufferings of our persecuted brothers and sisters, you no longer need to pray alone.
We welcome all who desire to pray for the persecuted church and consider it a joy to pray together with you.
